CHAPTER 15
The cool breeze of the following morning brought with it clarity, a slight hangover, and the stark realization that there was a man in my bed. It took a moment for last nightâs events to come flooding back to me, but when they did, and my brain connected the dots, it made sense why Daman Blackstone was sleeping beside me.
I craned my neck over my shoulder to get a look at him. He wasnât snoring, or rustling about, or fidgeting like I was sure I did in bed. He was simply laying there, on his side, his head delicately rested on the pillow, his dark hair perfectly brushed out of his face.
How was it possible that he looked this good asleep? Nobody looked good while sleeping. He also smelled goodâfruity, summery, but also masculine. I didnât want to admit Iâd just sniffed the air around him, Iâd never done that to a person before, but I had done it just now, and I hadnât regretted it.
Daman licked his lips, his tongue flicking playfully out of his mouth for an instant, and that⦠did things to me. Warm things. Exciting things. Yep, Iâve had enough, I thought to myself as I quietly, and carefully, tried to slide out of the bed and move away from him.
Lucky for me, Daman was a heavy sleeper. At least, thatâs what it seemed like when he didnât initially wake up. Once I was up, I walked over to the dresser, where a small bed had been prepared for Bubbles. She looked a lot more like what one would expect a person to look like first thing in the morningâmouth slightly parted, a little drool trickling out, her tentacle-legs sticking out of the blanket.
I nudged her, and she smacked her lips together, swatted the air, and said, âIâm not ready for school,â before going back to snuffling lightly.
Smiling at her, I decided to let her sleep a little more. Daman, too. I was the early riser, here, and I decided to embrace that by running myself a bath and getting ready for the day ahead. Today was the first day of the Siren Trials, and I honestly had no idea what to expect. The only thing I could count on was Delora making a frantic entrance at some point during the morning.
Which she did.
Without fail.
âWhy is no one else up?â she asked from the door to the bedroom.
I turned around and looked at Daman and Bubbles, then shrugged. âBubbles was out partying with Pixies last night,â I said, âAnd Captain Blackstone put away more than a few glasses of that weird, green wine we were given.â
She turned her incisive, almond eyes on me. âAnd youâre awake⦠how?â
âIâm not sure, to be honest. Maybe Iâm excited about whatâs going to happen today.â
âThat makes one of us.â
Daman sat bolt upright, his eyes springing awake, and he looked over at me, startled. âWhat time is it?â he asked.
âI have no way of knowing that,â I said. âMorning.â
He rubbed his eyes.
