Friday November 21

I woke up in bed, with Cam beside me and no mountain of empty beer bottles in sight. The alarm was ringing and Cam’s arm snaked out from under the covers to push the snooze button. Nine minutes later, when it rang for the second time, he had it turned off and was up and in his running clothes, kissing me on the cheek almost before my eyes were open. As the aroma of a fresh pot of coffee reached the loft, my stomach started twitching again. I threw back the covers and got out of bed, deciding I had to quit fighting this morning sickness thing and just get used to it. Morning sickness would probably last the first trimester and I had another two months to go. But the doctor had assured me it was a good sign that it was a strong and healthy pregnancy. I believed him but it didn’t make me feel any better as I kneeled in front of the toilet.

I brushed my teeth and then went into the kitchen and poured myself some coffee. I took a sip and waited. It seemed to be settling OK. I risked another sip, a bit bigger and bolder, and that did it. Once back in the bathroom, after throwing up, I decided to have a shower. I came out with the towel wrapped around me to find Cam sitting at the table with the newspaper and a cup of coffee.

‘Did you have a good run?’ I asked, trying to sound cheerful.

‘Katie, are you all right?’ Cam asked.

‘I’m fine,’ I said, worried about the turn the conversation was taking. Time to take control and change the subject. ‘Why don’t you call Eli and see if we can see Carrie today while I run upstairs and get dressed.’

‘There’s lots of time.’ He reached out for my hand and I let him take it. ‘Have a seat and have a coffee with me.’

He pulled me around the table and I sat down in a chair beside him. He got up and poured a coffee for me and pulled a muffin out of the microwave and put a huge pat of butter on it, setting it all down right in front of me. He gave my knee a little pat and then turned back to his sports section, acting very nonchalant.

‘You’re shaking,’ he noticed, without turning and looking at me.

‘I’m just a little chilly, I guess.’ I smiled, moving the muffin around on the plate.

‘Eat up, sweetie, and then we can get going.’

‘I’m not really hungry,’ I said decisively, pushing the muffin across the table from me.

‘I really think you should eat something. I mean, who knows how long we’re going to be?’ He smiled as he pulled the plate back in front of me.

I took the littlest piece of muffin I could manage and shoved it in my mouth, trying to swallow it whole before the taste or aroma sent my stomach rolling again.

‘Your coffee is getting cold,’ he said, flipping the page of the newspaper and moving the coffee cup closer to me.
