“What’s he talking about?” Olivia turned to Theo with a confused frown.

“It’s nothing.” Theo’s jaw tightened, his eyes flashing as he stared at Elias.

“It’s not nothing,” Elias replied frankly. “Theo.” His tone softened. “I’ve been where you are. You think I don’t know the signs? I didn’t want to have to say anything, after all a man’s demons are his own personal business, but the truth is we’ve got too much going on for secrets.”

Theo continued to stare at him silently, feeling Olivia’s eyes on him questioningly.

“I know what they did to you in Rome. All that shit they pumped you full of, it left you with quite a craving, didn’t it?” Elias said quietly.

“Is it true?” Olivia asked, her voice filled with hurt and worry. “Is that why you haven’t been getting better? What is it you’re using?”

“I don’t know,” Theo admitted.

“You don’t know?” Olivia’s stomach dropped as her equilibrium shifted. How could she have missed her husband having a drug problem, and more importantly, why hadn’t he said anything to her, of all people. Truth was the one thing they had, they didn’t lie to each other, at least that’s what she’d thought, but now she wondered how much more Theo was keeping from her.

Theo released a slow and reluctant breath, unable to bear the betrayal in Olivia’s eyes. He’d hurt her, the one thing he’d never wanted to do, but the truth was he hadn’t known how to tell her. She had so much on her shoulders without finding out her husband’s weakness.

“Scarlett’s friend Nate,” Theo explained. “The one who was also being held by the Veritas. They were forcing him to drug me, but despite everything Faraday was making him do, he protected me as much as he could. It would’ve been much worse if it hadn’t been for him.”

“Yeah, well, I’m still not convinced you haven’t got Stockholm syndrome, when it comes to him.” Olivia scowled.

“Once Elias and Davis found us and got us on the plane,” Theo continued, “Nate told me there would be some side effects of the drugs he’d given me.”

“So his solution was to give you more drugs?” Olivia snapped angrily.

“In his defence, I was supposed to use what he gave me to wean myself off them slowly.” Theo rubbed his face in frustration.

“But that hasn’t happened, has it?” Elias said carefully, and Theo shook his head.

“Between the pain, the nausea, the insomnia, and a million other things, I didn’t cut down like I was supposed to and I’m almost out.”

“I’m not going to lie to you, Theo.” Elias shook his head sympathetically. “You’re in for a rough time, but you do understand you need to get clean.”

“Yes,” he snapped defensively. “I’m well aware of that. I don’t need your condescension.”

“It’s not condescension,” Elias replied. “It’s concern.”

“Well go and be concerned somewhere else. I have this under control.”

“Really?” Elias snapped back. “Because it sure as hell doesn’t look like it from where I’m standing.”

“Alright, that’s enough.” Olivia raised her voice angrily, the floor trembling with the momentary slip of control on her powers.
