Chapter Seventeen

I was twenty minutes earlier than usual when my trembling fingertips caressed their way up the shimmering blue Bentley. I paused at the corner of the house, smiled across the lawn like I might be admiring something, counted to a calming ten, then made for the back door.

“There you are,” he said as I stepped into the kitchen.

“Here I am,” I said.

He was sitting at the head of the table with a beer bottle in his hand. He looked hotter than ever in a gray tee that matched my leggings. There were little sweat patches on his armpits and his slicked back hair had fallen on one side. Looked like he’d been busy.

I dropped my bag on the table, went to the fridge and filled a glass with lemonade.

“Suits you,” he said, “lemonade.”

I didn’t know what he meant by that but I sat myself down before I was told to.

“You’re early,” he said, “had a feeling you might be.”

“Ran all the way,” I said with a nervous smile and drank some lemonade as he watched me.

Watched me like his mind was whirring.

“I like the pigtails,” he said, “good for holding on to.”

“Thanks,” I said, enjoying the burn up for once.

“I did a lot of thinking, after last night.” He sat up straight, arms on the table, beer bottle clasped. “Fate, ay?” he said.

I could only stare at the man.

“I wanted to take a good look at you in the cold light of day, Ella. Had to make sure I was doing the right thing. And right now, sweet thing…”

Yes? What? Sweet thing? I liked that so much.

“Right now, I believe this is right, Ella. I really do.”

What is? What is?

“So, where to start?” he said. “I know that I have some bad news, so maybe I’ll start with that.”

My heart just died.

“I have to go away for a couple of days on business. I’ll miss seeing you, Ella.”

A couple of days? Then it will be my birthday. It seemed any chance of organizing a party just flew out the window.

“What kind of business?” I had the nerve to ask.

He sighed, looked away, thinking, hesitating. “I found a new place,” he finally said.

“Oh?” OH NO!

“Yeah. I’ll be moving all my stuff over the next couple days.”

“But you’ll be here in the evenings, right?”

He shook his head no. “Too much to do at the new place and only two days to do it in.”

“Why two days?”

He smiled at that. “So I can get back here for your birthday, little pet.”

My heart just shone right through him. “Oh… that would…” I started jabbering but he held up a hand and cut me off.

“Show me your shoulder,” he said.

“My what now?”

He’s changing the subject, dummy, said my little devil.

I pulled the neck of my sweater to one side and showed him his mark with a smile.

My tormentor smiled right back.

“I enjoyed sucking you,” he said. “I want more of that.”

“Me too,” I managed to say, though it came out so damn timid.

“You taught me something, Ella, you know? Yep, you taught me the benefits of making a list – a plan.
