I then consulted an interview published in the spiritualist magazine Light in 1919, which proved to be enlightening. I was surprised to learn that the first table-turning séance in which the writer had participated actually dated back to the end of 1886. His interest in spiritualism had begun very early on and in any case well before 1916. Conan Doyle subsequently continued to frequent the circles of disciples. It might therefore be deduced that he was already convinced of the existence of a psychic realm when he committed what might be called literary suicide by killing off Sherlock Holmes at Reichenbach Falls.
