By the time the A’s arrived in New York for a three-game series in late August, Burke was batting a pitiful .221, had yet to appear in a game for a week, and hadn’t been used as more than a pinch runner or defensive replacement since August 10.

More than fifty-three thousand people showed up for the August 26 night game, including Erik Sherman and his dad. Sherman’s hero, Graig Nettles, homered in the eighth inning to break a tie and lead the Yankees to a 5–4 win. But that’s not what Sherman remembers more than forty years later.

The Shermans had arrived at the stadium two hours early, giving Erik time to scamper down to the railing along the left-field line before the game started. He waited patiently, clutching the Yankee photo album he’d been given at the turnstiles, hoping one of the Oakland A’s would come over to sign autographs. Finally, one of them did. And when he handed Glenn Burke a photo album and a pen, neither could have guessed they’d meet again someday, when Erik Sherman would arrive on Glenn’s doorstep to tell his story to the world.
