COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

There’s an inherent tension in urban planning between the integrity of the block and the integrity of the building. Lars Steffensen, partner at Henning Larsen in Copenhagen, depicts cities, real and imagined, within whose tightly woven fabric each building remains an assertive sculptural figure. In a travel sketch of Florence, a historic domed church rests majestically within a dense grid of block-like vernacular buildings. In a travel sketch of San Gimignano, a stretch of masonry towers, sheds, and apartments are depicted as a single mass and then again, on the same page, as a series of smaller, overlapping, abstract volumes.

In a series of speculative drawings called Endless City, Steffensen achieves a similar harmony between architectural and urban scales. One drawing imagines a city as a dense spread of slender-ribbed skyscrapers, each standing alone and also intertwined with those around it like trees deep within a forest. Dark ink line-work fills the page, evoking an intense, deeply layered urban experience. The blocks around these buildings are outlined suggestively, in bare strokes, to suggest a ring of additional structures. It’s as if this model for architectural form-making can be extended continuously and indefinitely to build a whole city.
