CHAPTER 12

***ALEX***

I had thought about dinner, gone through fifty different venues, and finally came to a choice. I wanted something really nice for our first dinner together, but at the same time, I didn't want to completely overdo it. My first choice was my favorite steak restaurant, but I knew Tove would find it probably overwhelming and incredibly expensive. My next choice was on the complete opposite spectrum, having a burger night with fries sitting around the table. I didn't want to do that either because I didn't want her to think I thought less of her because she wasn't a millionaire. So, I went with the middle ground and chose my family's favorite restaurant growing up.

I was definitely giving too much thought to it. That seemed to be my MO. Overthink everything of no consequence, blurt out not thought through statements and then create completely ridiculous situations that most scriptwriters couldn’t come up with for a bad television sitcom.

I ended up choosing an Italian bistro on the Upper East Side that had been there longer than I had been alive. I realized when I was ordering I really didn't know what Tove liked to eat, so I basically ordered a little bit of everything. It was enough to feed probably the entire apartment building. But since I had a little bit of time, I sectioned each thing out into dishes to make it a little bit less cumbersome.

Lizzie pulled on my shirt as we sat at the table, waiting for Tove. "Daddy, I'm hungry."

I leaned down and kissed her cheek. "You've been eating fruit snacks all day. So you'll survive just a few more minutes while we wait for Tove."

Just at the sound of her name, Lizzie's eyes lit up. It was as if she had forgotten what we were waiting on. In Tove's defense, I hadn't even told her dinner was there. I didn't want to make her feel like she was rushed. It was only a couple minutes later before her door opened, and she walked out. Every time I saw her, it was like seeing a new person. She wasn't glammed up like the wedding, but she wasn't Tove in ‘ready to be a nanny mode’ either.

She was wearing a pair of skinny jeans, the cuffs rolled at the bottom, a short-sleeve T-shirt that hung off of one shoulder, her toes were painted bright pink, and her hair was dry and curled, pulled back and up in a loose ponytail. She applied a little bit of natural makeup, eyeliner, and some gloss on her lips. If given a choice between the three looks, I would say that was my favorite out of all of them. She was absolutely breathtaking. In fact, so beautiful that I barely felt Lizzie tug on my sleeve again. I looked down at her, realizing my mouth had fallen open yet again.

"Daddy, Tove's here. She looks pretty."

Tove laughed, looking wide-eyed at the table. "Wow. So, either you had no idea what to order me, or at any moment, a horde of fans are gonna come rushing in, starving.
