THIRTY-TWO

The man had taken the name Peter and been an ex-soldier from Singapore.

“He claimed to be AWOL,” Solomon said, “but he was hiding something.”

“Men on the run usually are,” I said, thinking that Peter was Jenkins. I’d found evidence that the SIB man had been here. “Where did he go?”

“Like I said, he disappeared. We have no idea, but it’s got us twitchy, Daniel especially.”

“Daniel?”

“Jeremiah’s the leader, and Daniel… well, he’s sort of the sergeant major.”

“Not Michael?” I asked, remembering that Solomon had called him the boss.

“No. Michael’s… well, let’s say he’s number three.”

“How did this Peter chap leave?” I asked, thinking of the fences.

“Just walked out.”

“Where did he go?”

Solomon looked at me hard. “Peter asked a lot of questions. You ask a lot of questions.”

“I’m not claiming to be AWOL,” I said. “I’m just looking for somewhere to hang my hat, remember? Questions are normal.”

“Peter asked lots of questions about the men. He poked around, if you know what I mean.”

I ate my soup and acted casual. “Assume I don’t.”

“He wanted to know the men’s backgrounds and said he was looking for a friend. Although I got the impression the person wasn’t really a friend. And if the person was a friend then why didn’t Peter know what he looked like?”

Jenkins looking for BlackJack.

“Daniel was going to ask him questions, but like I said, he disappeared,” he told me a second time, then added: “I mean, Daniel was going to interrogate him. Asking questions sounds too friendly. I think Peter ran because he didn’t want that cross-examination. He had something to hide—that’s what everyone else thinks anyway.”

“Did Peter make any friends here? Did you notice whether he talked to anyone—any girl—more than any other?” I was looking for evidence that he’d also spoken to Safiya.

“I think we should stop there.”

“I’m just interested.”

“No,” Solomon said. “You’re definitely asking too many questions.”
