Scorn sat nervously at the outdoor wrought iron table they put outside just for this purpose. He was fidgety and his knee bounced ninety to nothing as he waited for his family, a family he didn’t know, to come back out of the admin building and head his way. Lethal, Valor, Steel, Two, Nina, and Feral sat with him. Some at the table, others just beside it.

He watched as the door to the admin building opened and Roscoe led the way out of it with two women and General Ferriday following. “Fuck,” he mumbled, watching them pointing toward the house.

“It’s all good, Scorn. They’ve just gotten the talk, they know you don’t know them, just be patient and polite. It’ll be fine,” Steel said.

Scorn nodded.

“You got this, you’re doing it for them,” Lethal reminded him. “They remember you, they’re going to be emotional. Just let them get it out and if you don’t want to do it again, you don’t have to.”

“Yeah, you’re right,” Scorn said, his knee still bouncing and his fingers tapping out a rhythm on the table he sat at.

When they were about halfway, the older woman broke away from the rest and did her best to run toward him, though in actuality, it was only a slow jog. Her arms were extended toward him, and she called him something in Spanish that he didn’t know what the hell it meant, and called him a name he’d been told was his, but had no memory of.

“I think that one’s your mother,” Steel said.

Scorn nodded and got to his feet. He took a few steps away from his people, and waited for her to get to him.

“Got your back,” Steel said, coming to stand right beside him.

“I sure the fuck hope so today,” Scorn answered just as the woman got to him.

“Just remember, they love you. They helped make you a man at one point in your life,” Steel said. “And whether you remember it or not, parts of that man helped you survive.”

“Yeah, well, that man’s dead. But I’m gonna try to be decent just the same. None of this shit is their fault — that much I do know and recognize,” Scorn said.
