Chapter 12

P almer dropped me off at the apothecary, and we made plans to make plans to see each other outside of a homicide investigation. He was too busy to commit to a time and, with the holidays coming up, I wasn’t sure I had much time to see him either.

I walked into the apothecary to see Mackenzie waiting on four different customers. We were never this busy—what was going on? I chose the oldest customer to wait on first. Mr. Oates was in his eighties and walked with a cane. I didn’t want his bad leg to start hurting. “Good afternoon, Mr. Oates. How can I help you today?”

He smiled at me. “I’m not sure. I’d like to buy a Christmas gift for my lady friend, and I thought you could advise me.”

“Absolutely. What did you have in mind?”

“Something romantic, but,” he leaned in closer to me, “not too romantic. I don’t want to give Florence the wrong idea about me.”

“Florence? Do you mean Mrs. Dalton?”

“She’s a lovely woman, my Florence. I only wish I’d met her sixty years ago.”

I led him to the candle section of the shop. “I know she likes the lavender-scented candles. Do you want to get her one of those?”

He picked up the largest lavender candle I had. “I’ll take this one.”

“I’m sure she’ll like it. Do you have plans to spend the holiday together?” I asked.

He sighed. “I wish we did, but she’s spending the day at her granddaughter’s house. The whole family is there, and it’s one of the only times she sees everyone, so no. But we’ll spend New Year’s Eve together.”

We walked to the cash register. “That sounds lovely. The candle is fifteen dollars.”

“Before I pay you, do you have any tea that will help us stay up until midnight? I haven’t been up past ten o’clock for years now.”

Immediately I thought of the gunpowder green tea. “I know just the thing. It’ll help you stay awake, but won’t keep you from falling asleep when you want to.”

“Sounds perfect,” he said.

“It’s the silver tin on the top row of the tea display,” I said.

He took one box down and set it on the counter next to his candle.

I rang his order up and wished him a happy holiday. As he walked out of the shop, I looked around and Mackenzie was helping our last customer. I was pleased to see she could work through a group of customers so quickly.

The door chimes rang, and the entire Subramanian family walked in. My landlord entered first with his wife, Nila, and behind them were Prashad and his wife, Heather, walking arm in arm. They were all grinning and laughing.

“There she is, the woman I owe so much to,” my landlord said.

I smiled, but felt uncomfortable. “It’s nice to see they let you out so quickly, Prashad.”

Prashad took my hand and shook it hard enough to hurt. “I’d still be in jail if it weren’t for you, Miss Proctor. Thank you.”

I pulled my hand out of his grasp and flexed my fingers.
