Chapter 22

A short while later when I walked into the house with Tigger in tow, Rook bounded to us. I hooked a leash onto his collar, stowed Tigger in his cat backpack with the windows down, and the three of us walked on the beach. Of course, I couldn’t help staring at the Pier and thinking about the bomb that had ended Sarita’s life. Who had set it? Was it the same person who had sparked the one at Intime? Did that person intend to attack Rhett . . . or me . . . again? On the way home, I thought about the warning brick that someone had tossed through our window. Had the culprit been a teenaged prankster, as Appleby had proposed, or Sarita . . . or someone else?

Because my nerves were on edge—the glass of pinot noir at Vines hadn’t settled them at all—I wasn’t craving food. Nevertheless, I ate a light meal of Monterey Jack cheese and chopped avocado on an English muffin. If I didn’t eat, I’d wake in the wee hours craving a snack. At ten, I crawled into bed and hoped Rook would be my alarm bell if anybody approached the house.

Saturday morning, I again awoke feeling anxious. I dressed in a cherry-red sundress that was sure to buoy my spirits, fed the pets, downed a protein shake that I’d made with fresh peaches, milk, yogurt, and non-GMO protein powder, and headed to the shop. A fire truck was stationed in the parking lot in front of Beaders of Paradise. Adults and children were huddling around the display of kittens in the wire crate. Bucky and Nico, both in uniform, were overseeing the Fire Sale event.

Only Bailey and her sweet Brianna were in the shop. I set Tigger on his kitty condo, but he instantly hurtled to the floor to sniff Brianna in her sit-to-stand seat. She stretched her arms, her hands wiggling for him.

“I see your mother finally gave you your baby back,” I joked.

“Bright and early, but she wants her to visit soon. She adores her.”

“What’s not to adore?” I peered out at the parking lot. “Did you get the k-i-t-t-y?” I asked.

“Yes! Tito approved of a ginger cat, so I took Brianna over before we opened and showed her the two. She chose Spitfire. We’ll take her home at the end of the day and get her settled.”

“Spitfire is a she?”

She bobbed her head. “Bucky gave them all gender-neutral names.”

I spotted Todd Strachline and his daughters among the kitten-hunting crowd. I wondered how his girls had received the news. Would a new kitten console their broken hearts? I noticed Z.Z. and Jake in the throng, as well. “Hey, has Jake come by to consult with my aunt yet?”

“Not that I know of.”

I studied him again. He didn’t look fretful. His arm was comfortably around Z.Z.’s shoulders, so I decided to let it go. He was a grown adult. He could manage his appointments and certainly had the option to change his mind about having a tarot card reading.
