I was about to give up any hope of finding her, with more than a hint of relief, when I spotted her at the common lawn area furthest from the café. Brittany was at a bench feeding the remains of the bread from her sandwich to a few birds that had gathered for a handout. It had been a cold and long winter, and I was certain they were grateful for any supplements to their diets they could get. Brittany was lost in thought, and she didn’t even hear me approach.
When I was within five feet of her, I cleared my voice and asked, “Mind if I join you?”
“Hey, Sarah. As a matter of fact, you can have it all to yourself. I’m heading back to the café. My lunch-break is just about over.”
“Can you give me one minute? I was actually out looking for you. Jack told me where I could find you.”
“What’s up?” she asked. “Is it about what happened to the woman judging your contest? I already told Lane that I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.”
“Did he ask you any questions about possible motives you might have had for doing something to one of the water glasses?”
I was expecting outrage, or even denial, but Brittany just nodded. “He did, and I didn’t blame him one bit. It kind of looks bad for me, doesn’t it? Both of us, as a matter of fact. I’m sorry about what happened to that woman, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t relieved when I heard that the food was okay.”
“I was happy about that, too, but didn’t you serve the water, too, though?”
“No, it was already there when I got on the stage. The entire time I was up there, I was in view of the audience. All I did was cart six plates of food, three of yours and three of the chef’s, from one station to the other, and then I sat down with everyone else to see how they voted. Yours looked and smelled delicious, by the way. There’s no way that chef could have beaten you.”
“Thanks. I appreciate the kind words, but how could you tell? The plates were marked on the bottom out of sight.”
“I saw you dish yours out though, remember?”
“Well, it’s kind of you to say.” Suddenly I felt bad about interrogating this girl even as she was complimenting me on my food.
“I’m not being kind, Sarah. His chicken looked awful, didn’t it? He didn’t stand a chance, and by the look on his face when he saw your food, I think he knew it. He was lucky it never got to the judging stage, because he wouldn’t have stood a chance.”
I hadn’t seen that, but I took Brittany’s word for it. A silly and sudden thought struck me. Could Chef Craig have poisoned the water to kill the taste-off before it began? Was his reputation more important to him that he’d admitted? If he was the killer, he
