Chapter

Nine

“I will stop at nothing,” Asari said as he looked down upon the ruins that had once been Preserve.

“What can we do?” Kota, from the Wolves tribe, asked. “The dragons have shown us that they are more powerful than we could’ve ever imagined.”

The Wolves belonged to a northern Kitsune clan. They were fierce in battle, unafraid, but also without caution. The Foxes didn’t care for their reckless ways, but it produced results, and in the end, a fair number of dragons had been struck down due to the sacrifices of many dead Wolves.

“Everyone has a weakness,” Asari replied. “Even the dragons, and I intend to figure out what it is.”

“But we don’t have enough fighters left to even attempt an attack,” Aoki said.

“We send runners to all corners of this land, and they’ll carry messages from us. A call to arms and join us in battle. This time, we call on all the races. Onis, kitsunes, and humans. We need everyone here to defeat the dragons,” Asari instructed.

“What if the onis are allies of the dragons?” Kota asked. “These small dragon-like beings could just be the onis, but in a new shape. Like the abysmal kappas.”

“That is a chance we must take,” Asari said. “There have been reports, albeit few, that the dragons have killed the onis as well, but I don’t know if that’s true.”

“I would be completely certain of this before we initiate contact with any oni,” a gray mustached kitsune said.

It was one of the Preserve elders. His gilded kimono was in rags as he stood on the ruins of what used to be his temple. Asari and Aoki took a knee while Kota remained standing. It had become a tradition among the kitsunes not to venerate elders from other clans. It made little sense, but had become a way to differentiate one group from another. It was not what Kami had wanted when she created them, but it seemed to be a natural progression in the ultra-competitive world of the faes.

“Elder Yoshino,” Asari said, surprise. “I am thrilled to see you alive.”

“It is not because of the defense of the Eagles, I am afraid.” The elder fae looked down at them with contempt.

Asari rose and said, “The odds were stacked against us. We did our best.”

“I suppose so.” Yoshino descended from the rubble. “Are there enough kitsunes to take out this dreaded threat before we all become extinct?”

“Elder Yoshino.” Aoki rose as well. “We will do everything in our power to defeat the enemy and its allies.”

“I would venture out into the universe to find warriors instead of sending runners.” Yoshino came to stand before Asari. “There is a heavy burden on your shoulders now, Eagle. Make us proud.”

Yoshino walked past him and continued through the ruins of his once proud home. Asari looked at the elder from behind with tears in his eyes. He didn’t know what pained him more: the disappointment in Yoshino’s voice, the task now placed upon him, or the loss of Silvie.
