CHAPTER THREE

GHOSTS IN THE VAULTS

Unlike the vault of Clan Silver, which lay deep underground, the Gold treasures were stored in a high narrow tower at the centre of New Mint Yard. Rose and Max made their way to the alleys that bordered the Gold estate. Splendid gilded walls encircled the manse and its grounds, as well as the esteemed workshops of the master metalworkers of the clan. Guards patrolled the sheer walls, which were devoid of entrances other than the grand main gateway. The guards were accompanied by lantern-bearers, and in the wan light, their breath could be seen smoking on the chill air. Clearly, security had been stepped up since Max had last paid a visit to the place. Gold were known for their love of ornament, but on these walls there were no elaborate carvings to use as handholds and footholds. The only buttresses were sheathed in nets of razored steel. Max knew that, in comparison to entering the Moonmetal Manse, finding a way in would be extremely difficult. “We could do with making ourselves invisible,” he said dryly.

“Like Jack Ash does,” Rose remarked.

Max glanced at her. “What do you mean?”

Rose explained Jack’s technique, or what she knew of it. “Perhaps you could use barishi to similar effect,” she said. “What do you think?”

“I’ve never attempted such a thing,” Max replied. He considered. “It seems that for barishi to create an effect, it only has to be directed towards something with intention, so I suppose it is feasible, but even if I was successful, I can’t guarantee that protection would extend to you.”

“We have to try.”

“You shouldn’t be placing yourself in this danger. I should proceed alone.”

Rose unhooked a rope from her belt, a thin silken cord that was immensely strong. “I’m coming with you. My welfare is not your concern.”

Max sighed and shook his head, taking up the rope that was coiled upon his own belt. At the end of the rope was a grappling hook. “If you become an impediment, I might have to abandon you.”

“And I you. Use barishi, Max.”

Max closed his eyes, and for some moments, a host of strange symbols pulsed before his mind’s eye. It was almost as if the moment he thought of barishi, it awoke within him. His fingers were tingling, and also the mark over his heart. Should he use any of the symbols Jenny had already taught him? They didn’t seem appropriate. Yet Jenny had told him how strongly barishi flowed within him.

Imagine that streaming current now, a golden light flowing through the veins and arteries of your body . . .

He had to believe it. He must will himself to be invisible to the guards and attempt to extend that influence over Rose. His whole body tingled, his heart burning icy cold. In his mind, he was surrounded by a caul of golden light that shimmered against the sky. Is this belief? Is this enough?

He opened his eyes to find Rose staring at him through her mask, in curiosity and not a little fear.
