Chapter Sixteen

A Meeting of The Elders

My father had scrambled a last minute meeting with the Lycan Elders, but given their large territories it took three days to gather them all at the manor. Over those days, we had dealt with a messenger from Yvonne once a day and had also received one from Grant and another from Ryland. All had been sent back to their masters with messages to leave us be or action would be taken. We were halfway through day four and hadn’t seen another, but with a woman like my cousin that didn’t mean much. Angel and I sat on the back porch of the manor, staring out over the sprawling fields beyond.

We were joined by my parents first, followed at short intervals by each of the other nine alphas that made up the Elders. I noticed Angel’s foot tapping nervously on the redwood deck and reached over to take her hand in mine. She glanced over, our eyes meeting and the fidgeting stopped as she smiled at me. I pushed gently and let my calm wash over her, eliciting a soft sigh and a small nod of thanks. I lifted a hand to brush her hair behind her ear and winked at her as the last of the Elders took his seat.

“Welcome. Thank you all for coming on such short notice.”

My father’s deep voice greeted the group and a chorus of “You’re welcome” and “don’t mention it” went up around the group. I smiled as I looked at the old wolves present, the youngest of them at least twice my age. I scanned their faces as I took a calming breath, leaving the bond open and allowing my emotions to wash over Angel in a steady wave. This was bound to be terrifying for her after the incident with the Vampires having happened so recently.

“I apologize for the distinct lack of information I could manage to give each of you over the phone. I can imagine you understand not wanting to repeat myself nine times.” They all chuckled and several responses of “hear, hear” sounded from the gathered group. “Our situation is this. Silver, as some of you may already know, has taken a mate. The girl happens to be human.”

A murmur went through the group, punctuated by a few nods but no one lost their temper or made any rude remarks. It was a start and I could only hope things continued down the same path. The wolves tended to be more accepting than the Vampires since they didn’t use humans for food. As a species able to hunt regular game off in the woods, they had always lived peacefully side by side with humans. It was in our favor they did such since it meant their outlook on the species was more tolerant.

“The Vampire council recently ruled in favor of severing the bond and removing the girl. They attempted to follow through with it and only Hephaestus and Hades stepping in stopped the meeting from becoming a massacre.
