Chapter Eleven
June 4
The soft knock on Loganâs bedroom door the next morning, roused him. For a moment, he didnât realize where he was, but then, as he lifted his head, he realized he was home, not in the hospital. Even the smells were different. Familiar. Comforting.
âCome in,â he rasped, struggling to sit up, the bed covers falling away to his waist. He wasnât one to wear pajamas, but Lea had found a pair of pale blue striped cotton bottoms. Last night had been embarrassing to him and, he was sure, to her, also.
The door cracked open and Lea stuck her head in. âHey, itâs nine a.m. I wanted to make sure you are all right.â
âYes, Iâm okay. Come in,â he said thickly, sitting upright.
Lea pushed the door open and stepped inside. âI woke you.â
âNine is late for me,â he muttered, wiping his face with his hand. âItâs way past time I was up.â He saw the sunlight outside the room, slanting out into the hallway. Lea was wearing a pale green tee, jeans, and her work boots. She had a canvas apron around her waist and he could smell the scent of wood around her. âBeen working out in the shop?â His ankle throbbed a little and he knew the pain pill had worn off.
âYes, Iâm choosing the different types of wood for the next two cabinet doors.â She smiled, coming to the end of his large king-size bed, pulling the bedclothes up and off the frame that protected the cast on his lower leg. âAre you in pain?â
Hungrily, he absorbed her quiet demeanor, glad to see her. âYes, but itâs not killing me. Can you help me so I can lift my legs, turn, and put them on the floor?â
âSure can.â
âHow long have you been up?â
âSince five a.m.â
âYou look rested.â And she did. And beautiful in her own, natural way.
âAs soon as I tucked you in last night after we got home? I took a shower and fell into my bed and slept. That must have been around nine p.m.â
âI think Iâm still sleeping off that drug they used in my surgery,â he groused, watching her lift the frame away and set it on the footboard. Lifting his legs, he soon had his left foot on the coolness of the cedar floor. He was careful to put his pink-sock-enclosed right foot down very carefully. He wore nothing above his waist and for a split second, he thought he saw something in Leaâs eyes, like a woman appreciating him. It could have been his groggy, shorting-out brain, however, and he tried not to put too much stock into it.
âHand me my bathrobe?â he asked. âI need to get to the bathroom.â
In no time, she had the blue striped robe on him. Every time her fingers brushed his flesh, a soft ache began deep within Logan. Startled by it, he said nothing. Lea brought over the pair of crutches. She knelt down and added one sheepskin moccasin to his left foot,
