CHAPTER TEN

Kelli stomped through the garden scrubbing at her flaming cheeks. “The prince,” she growled, “he was the prince all along.” She pressed a hand to her forehead. “God, I feel like such an idiot.” She shook her head. Weariness, both in body and spirit dragged at her. She made her way up to her little room. Once safely bolted inside, snuggled under the covers, she let the tears come.

Kelli didn’t even know exactly why she was crying. “Stress,” she whispered. Maybe it was stress. Maybe some homesickness or the realization that she really didn’t belong in this world no matter how nice everyone seemed to be, no matter what the witch said.

She sniffled, letting the day drag her eyelids closed. “He seemed so sweet,” and hot, she added silently. Yes, he was hot. His eyes seemed to look at only her. His voice, deep and resonant, stirred little fires deep in her core. And he’d been sleeping with a different woman every night for the last month. A lick of temper had her leaning up to pound her flat little pillow into submission. She felt betrayed even though she hadn’t met him before that afternoon.

Well, it shouldn’t be hard to stay out of his sight. She’d lay low for the next two days and go see Fidelia about that trip back home. She might not have a job back home and who knew how long she’d actually been gone in the real world, but it was where she belonged. No matter that no one was left for her there and she might have an eviction notice taped to her door. The sooner she got back home, the sooner she could work on getting her life back on track and forget about how a pair of blue eyes and a strong chest had made her feel.

Regis slammed into his father’s rooms. The trio of doctors who had been tending to the king since he began failing stood at the edge of the bed the same grim look on all their faces.

“What happened?”

Azoric, the head physician, shook his head, “He was holding his own, Your Highness. We actually felt that he was growing stronger, that he was starting to accept your mother’s death and move out of this dangerous mourning. Just moments ago, he said that it was time; that you’d be just fine and he closed his eyes.” He looked at his colleagues for confirmation. They nodded in unison. “We thought he’d gone to sleep when we noticed his breathing change.”

Regis stared at his father whose chest barely rose and fell. “We’re losing him,” he murmured.

Gore’s hand fell to Regis’ shoulder. “I’ve sent for Fidelia,” the Captain said. “She might be able to shed some light on this situation.”

Azoric nodded. “Excellent thought, Captain. I should have thought of that myself.” He rested a hand on the king’s shoulder. “This smacks more of magic than medicine.”

Fidelia arrived a few moments later wrapped in a floor length fuzzy lavender robe. Her purple tinged hair hung loose to her tiny waist.
