Bridget was already inside Lynnâs apartment, door slightly ajar, when Julia and Carly arrived Saturday morning.
âBridget?â Julia called as she peeked her head in.
Bridget called to them from an adjacent room. âIâm back here in her bedroom. Come join me.â
The modestly-sized room was decorated in black and cream with red accents. âThis looks like it belongs in Hollywood,â said Carly.
Bridget chuckled. âLynn always thought she belonged there, even as a child. She used makeup, wore false eyelashes, and was copying every clothing fad that came along by the time she was in ninth grade. Dad hated it, being kinda old-fashioned, but Mom tolerated it. She figured it was better than getting tattoos and doing drugs.â
âI understand that,â said Julia. âI think itâs along the lines of suggestions to parents to âpick their fights.â Kids outgrow fads and if itâs not hurting them, leave it be.â
âLynn was always testy and quick with her temper. Iâm sure thatâs exactly what our mom was doing. She let her be a drama queen. It was easier to get along with her that way.â
âWhat about you?â asked Julia. âDid it bother you that your sister acted like that? Or got a lot of attention that way?â
Bridgetâs smile faded. âNot really. I mostly ignored her. Besides she was six years older than I was and graduated out of high school the same year I finished sixth grade. We were never close.â
Julia noticed a touch of resignation in Bridgetâs voice and wondered how true her comment was.
âWhat about the usual suspects in a murder, such as someone who would benefit from her death, or a jealous ex-boyfriend, or someone that sheâd maligned?â
Bridget shook her head. âNone of those, I think, although I wouldnât know if sheâd made anyone angry enough to kill her.â
âOkay, back to checking the apartment. Did you notice anything in here that seems out of place? Or that doesnât jibe with what you know about your sister?â Julia looked around the room that seemed to dare someone to leave anything where it didnât belong. It felt cold and sterile, despite the attempt at making it comfortable with its soft bedding, drapes, and red accents.
âNot in the bedroom, but follow me into her bathroom.â Bridget walked into the adjoining bath where she pointed out a bottle of Shalimar. âBridget didnât use that fragrance. I remember her saying she hated it. She always, always, wore Estee by Estee Lauder. One time she said a boyfriend gave her a bottle of Shalimar that she passed on to someone else who liked it. After they broke up, of course.â
âOoh la la. Thatâs expensive stuff,â said Carly.
âCould she have a new boyfriend who gave her this bottle? This Leo, maybe?â asked Julia.
âMaybe. She and I havenât talked much lately.â
âWe should ask the police to check it for fingerprints. It might give us a lead.â Julia used a tissue to pick up the distinctive bottle and carefully wrapped it to protect from any further smudges before putting it in her jacket pocket.
