Chapter Eighteen

On the incident board, photographs of the two victims, and the details of the crime scenes, had been placed side by side.

Ryan turned to his sergeant, who was half sitting, half leaning on a desk on the other side of the room. She’d just got back from speaking to the second victim’s family and fed back everything she’d learned. One ankle was hooked over the other, and she used her hands to prop herself up.

“What is it that’s connecting these two people,” Ryan said, “because there has to be something. I’m sure the sewn lips are sending a message, and I highly doubt that whoever has chosen the victims has done so at random.”

Mallory chewed at her lower lip as she thought. “They were of a similar sort of age. They’re both from Bristol.” She let out a breath. “Other than that, we’ve got nothing.”

“We need to dig deeper. There has to be something.”

“They weren’t even in a similar area when they went missing,” Mallory said. “One was south of the city, the other in the north. They are both Bristol born and bred, though.”

Ryan considered this for a moment. “Let’s go back farther. Where did they go to school? Where have they worked in the past? Who are their families? There must be some kind of connection.”

He pressed his knuckles to his lips. It was incredibly frustrating that he couldn’t figure out what tied the victims together. Right now, they just looked like two random people from different parts of the city, but he knew that couldn’t be the case. Even murders that appeared to be random, normally weren’t, and the MO of the lips being sewn was too specific for this to be a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. There had to be a link.

Mallory took her phone from her pocket. “I did see something on the calendar in Jillian’s kitchen. I snapped a photograph.”

She straightened and brought the phone over to him. “It’s hard to know what it means.” Mallory spread two fingers on the screen to make the image bigger. “It’s just two initials: R.G.”

“Did the family have any idea what the initials stood for?”

“Nope. I already asked them.”

“If Jillian went out the evening before she died, that could easily have been when she was abducted.”

“We’ve taken Jillian’s iPad and handed it over to digital forensics,” Mallory said. “With any luck, they’ll find something on it that will give us a better idea about what R.G. might stand for.”

“Good. What about her bank records? Any sign of her cards being used?”

“No. The last time she used her card was to pay for parking near where she works. According to her colleagues, she left at five-thirty, and she was acting normally.”

“And her phone data? Where was the last ping from?”

“Near her home on the evening before she died. We know she was driving when she left work, because she paid for parking, and her car is on the driveway at home, so we know she made it back to her house.
