I slid my hands into my pockets and watched Coop and Sheppard inspect the damage to my car tires.
âWhoâd you piss off this time?â Coop said.
âNo idea,â I said.
âYou tellinâ me you canât think of anyoneânot one person?â
I could think of one person, and he just so happened to be grilling me right now.
âI assume someoneâs not thrilled about me looking into Rebecca Barlowâs death and wants to make sure I know heâs keeping tabs on me.â
Coop tossed his head back and laughed. âRight, I almost forgot. Nancy Drew is on the case, folks. You better watch out.â
I wasnât in the mood to accept his ignorant banter. Sometimes, even though I knew I should be the bigger person, I needed to be the smaller one even more.
âCan you stop giving me crap for one minute, Coop?â I asked. âOr is it too much to ask? I didnât have to call you about this, but I did.â
âYou didnât call me,â Coop said. âYou called Sheppard.â
Sheppard looked at Coop like heâd better keep his mouth shut, but Coop wasnât one to follow orders, even when they were given by his superior.
âWell, youâve upset someone,â Sheppard said to me. âNo note or message was left?â
âThe tires are the message,â I said. âWouldnât you agree?â
âConfusing message if you ask me,â Sheppard said. âIn the middle of the day to boot. âCourse you did park around back, a rookie move to be sure. It made it easier for whoever did this to vandalize your vehicle without being seen.â
âIt also means they know my car. I think that might be the point of all thisâto let me know heâs watching and to show heâs handy with a knife.â
âFirst, you catch a man checking out what you were doing at the lake house, and now this,â Sheppard said. âYouâre being followed, all right.â
I felt like hoisting my middle finger into the air. If I were being watched right now, I wanted to be clear with my own message. Instead, I showed remarkable restraint.
âThe guy I saw at the lake house ⦠I think he wanted me to see him, to know he was there, watching me. I think he knew he was far enough away to make it impossible for me to ID him.â
Coop broke his silence. âIf someone did kill the Barlow woman, you shouldnât be involved in her case any longer.â
Maybe he was right. But it was too late now.
