“This doesn’t tell me anything,” Connor said, choking back a sob and pushing the paper back toward Agent Beadsley, who slid it back into her folder.

“I don’t have that kind of money,” Connor said, and I could tell by the wild look in his eyes he was letting his mind go to the worst-case scenario.

“Don’t worry. We will handle this. Maybe I should reach out to your parents?” As a parent, I couldn’t even imagine what they were going through.

“They don’t want to be bothered. I will tell them what I think they can handle.”

That didn’t sit right with me. “I’m sure they can handle more than you think, Connor. I’m sure they would want to know every last detail.”

“I said I would handle my parents.” His voice rose a little and I tilted my head and frowned at him.

“Sorry. This is all a little overwhelming. I know you mean well but please trust me when it comes to my parents.”

I backed off and turned toward Agent Beadsley. I wanted to ask her what the odds of the victim being let go were in cases like this, but I had a feeling the odds weren’t working in Cassie’s favor. And that wasn’t something I wanted her to confirm in front Connor. I wasn’t sure he could take any more bad news. I agreed that this wasn’t something her agent pulled for publicity, but wondered who would refer to Cassie as Gus’ little darling. The note seemed to imply that they knew Cassie was Gus’ meal ticket. Now to figure out who might get me closer to finding out who the kidnapper was.
