Nala drifted in and out of consciousness, never quite sleeping, never quite awake. The metallic smell of The Sickness still hung on the wind, competing with the odors of smoke and death and rot which drifted over the city. She could feel The Sickness inside of her as well, a constant background hum of infection that couldn’t quite take hold. The sirens and gunshots and other human noises had largely stopped, replaced by an uncharacteristic silence. Sick/dead things shuffled aimlessly by, bumping into parked cars, stumbling toward some unknowable goal perhaps, or perhaps merely cursed to move endlessly like a shark searching for prey.

Nala stayed quiet, lying across The Woman’s lap, ready to defend her if one of the creatures moved toward them. They did not. She was numb to every sensation except the need to protect The Woman. She was unable to feel hungry, or thirsty, or even the pain from her injuries. She wondered sometimes when The Woman would wake up. She would like to hear her voice again. She waited patiently. She’s very good at waiting when she’s on-duty.
