Chapter Ten

“I APPRECIATE YOUR calling, Mrs. Anderson.”

“As I said, I’m sorry it has to be on such short notice, but Mr. Baxter said it couldn’t wait.”

Patricia waited for Mrs. Anderson to give her more information, or a hint as to why Morgan wanted so urgently to see her. Of course she had her own speculations. The sudden knot in her stomach, the rush of tension that made her feel so hot, made Patricia wonder if Morgan was still going to pursue a relationship beyond the one she’d established. Yet, Patricia seriously doubted that Morgan would have used his secretary as a go-between for anything personal, no matter how long she’d worked for him. Which only left the possibility of Kent as being the subject in question.

“I can leave soon but I can’t get there much before three-thirty, I’m afraid.”

“That’s fine. Anyway, Mr. Baxter is holding a contracts meeting at the moment. I’m sure I can guarantee that he’ll be free when you get here.”

“Then I’ll see you about three-thirty.”

Patricia hung up the phone with mixed feelings. On the one hand she was certain that this call from Morgan at the eleventh hour before Thanksgiving was about Kent. She hoped it was nothing serious, but she was secretly pleased that Morgan continued to seek her advice and guidance. But the more complicated question remained at the back of her mind of whether the request to see her was personal.

And yet, when Morgan had called her earlier to ask her out it sounded to Patricia too much like a date. A date meant them being alone. A date would end at her apartment, at the door. In another kiss. She’d already asked herself why she hadn’t stopped him the first time. Quite simply, it was because she’d never thought to.

In the spontaneity of that moment she was curious about how Morgan would kiss her, and how it would feel. It had been, in her mind, unbelievably erotic in its thoroughness because it hadn’t been just to satisfy himself. Morgan wanted her to respond, to feel something, too. She had. Even now her insides curled with the memory of how nice it felt to be kissed by him.

Since there was absolutely no point in torturing herself this way, Patricia shook off the questions with no answers, and got up from her desk. She lifted an armful of textbooks and left her office, encountering Jerome in the outer room.

“Where are you off to?” he asked absently as he looked quickly through a sheaf of notes and messages.

“Down to my car with these books. I have some reading to do.”

“Over the holiday weekend? Why don’t you give it a rest?”

“Because I’m almost finished with my paper. I’m just starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I have my orals scheduled for the spring.”

“Don’t worry. All the work is going to pay off for you. If I decide to go for a post graduate degree, can I use your notes?”

Patricia grimaced. “You say you hated school.
