Chapter 10

Once the children ate, Kurt and Marci got them settled back to sleep. The kids drifted off quickly, their bellies full for the first time in days. Kurt checked on the three children one last time and turned to walk away.

Marci pulled on his arm and leaned in with her lips so close to his ear he could feel her breath. “I like kids, Kurt. We could go make a baby right now.” She giggled a little as she said it and reached down to rub his ass with one hand.

Kurt pulled away, shocked again at the sudden shift in Marci’s mood. Something was definitely wrong with her. Had she fallen under early effects of whatever was happening to the other adults outside?

“Marci, stop that,” Kurt whispered. He brushed her hand away from his ass and pulled away from her grasp. “This is not the time or place for this. It’s not like I don’t want to fool around with you at some point, but we’ve got a mission to work on here and something about the way you’re acting isn’t quite right. Are you sure you’re feeling all right?”

“Don’t make this about me being sick or something. It sounds like you’re telling me you’re not interested in me anymore?” Marci said with a pout.

“That’s not what I’m saying at all. Look, Marci, you’re not acting the way you should be.”

“Oh, so now I’m sick, is it? Well, in that case, maybe I don’t want to sleep with you after all.” Marci stormed off to the far side of the room.

Kurt sighed. He wanted to go after her, but after what she just did, he was afraid she would get the wrong impression. Even if he didn’t go after her, Kurt needed to keep an eye on her in case she became more erratic or started getting violent like the people outside.

He decided to settle down by the door and keep watch. He heard Marci moving around on the far side of the room but couldn’t see what she was doing in the darkness. He shrugged and decided that it was safe enough here, leaning against the steel doors leading out to the lobby. No one would be able to get in or out the door without waking him.

It seemed as if as soon as his eyes closed, the sound of voices jolted Kurt back awake. He sat up quickly, trying to pick up where the voices were coming from as he reoriented himself to his surroundings.

Kurt gathered his wits and realized it was morning. He’d been asleep for several hours leaning up against the doors leading outside. Sunlight streamed in through the slot in the roof around the telescope.

The voices that awakened him were from Marci and the kids, chatting over by one of the desks.

Kurt sniffed at the air. Something smelled delicious and his stomach growled. “Are you cooking something, Marci?”

“I am. I found a hot plate and managed to connect it to the solar panel on the roof for power.
