Chapter Thirteen
With one hand over my mouth, I staggered backward and slumped against the wall. My brain couldnât quite process the officerâs words. Deborah was dead. How? Why?
âAre you sure?â I asked.
âAffirmative. Weâve been doing this a long time,â the officer said.
Now I understood why the other officer was talking into his phone and not speaking to Deborah or handcuffing her. He must be calling an ambulance to come and take her away. I moved toward the doorway, but he stepped in front of me.
âI canât let you go in there. Itâs a crime scene.â
âI can help! Call the Shady Grove police. Iâve helped them solve two crimes.â
Sam stepped forward, drawing the officerâs attention away from me. âDeborah just inherited a lot of money. Do you think she was murdered?â
âUnlikely, son. She left a suicide note.â
Why would Deborah kill herself when she was only hours away from escape? The Canadian border wasnât that far. She could have rented a car at the airport, headed north, and been enjoying poutine for her dinner. None of this made sense. I needed to see the note. There had to be a way inside the room.
As if someone was looking out for me, the officerâs phone rang. He glanced at the screen, then pointed toward the door. âI have to take this. Weâve got this under control. You should go.â
Before we could respond, he took the call and disappeared through the door to Deborahâs office. I couldnât see where he went or the other officer, but I needed to go inside.
Two steps from the door, Sam caught my arm. âPlease donât get arrested.â
âI have to see what happened. I might get a vision!â
âI know, butâ¦â He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. âAt least let me distract them for you.â
Right. Good point. I nodded and flattened myself against the wall. Sam walked back toward the exit, then dropped to his knees, screaming. âOh, this is terrible! I feel faint. I canât breathe! Somebody help me!â
His performance seemed exaggerated to me, but all it had to do was cause a commotion. He certainly did that. The door to Deborahâs office swung outward, and Officer #2 appeared. Without even glancing at me, he raced to Samâs side. I snuck past him, through the opening. Deborahâs desk was against the far wall. She sat there, slumped forward. Since nothing could be gained from touching her, I looked at the desk to see what I could find.
A mostly full teacup, steam still rising from the top. The lipstick on the rim matched the shade Deborah had worn yesterday. Beside it, I spotted what I was looking for.
A piece of paper with a large monogrammed P at the top.
Itâs over. Iâm sorry.
That was all it said. Sam was right, Deborah mustâve realized we were onto her. If we tested the tea in her cup, I suspected it would contain the same poison sheâd used to murder her aunt. That was a police matter, though. My powers didnât extend to detecting toxic substances.
