Chapter Eight
The coven was awake and ecstatic to see Cassandra when she walked through the front door. Everyone wanted to know about her âRomantic getawayâ with Denny, but she told them there would be all sorts of storytelling after she had a nap. âYou knowâ¦magical sex can be exhausting.â
Brianna escorted her up the stairs, and when the bedroom door closed, Brianna hugged her tightly. âOh my god, I am so happy to see you.â She pulled back. âHow are you, really? You look exhausted.â
Cassandra stared at the woman who, on another timeline, was her very best friend, but this woman? She was an imposter, and Cassandra needed to remember that. âIâm fine, really.â
âI spoke to Rush,â she whispered in Cassandraâs ear, still holding her closely. âNot here.â
Cassandra pulled back and studied Briannaâs eyes.
She was scared.
Truly afraid. But of what?
âThe park, then.â
Brianna nodded and they left down the back stairwell.
As they walked to the park, Brianna reached for her hand.
Cassandra winced as she looked away and took Briannaâs hand. Brianna would never have reached for Cassandraâs hand⦠not in a million years. She knew how Cassandra felt about being touched without permission. This Brianna clearly did not know.
When they reached the park, they sat on a bench Cassandra used to sit in with Denny. God, how that felt like it was a hundred years ago.
âRush did not wish to speak to me, Cassandra, but her agitation was palpable. All she kept saying was to send you to the Sorrel House as soon as you returned.â
Cassandra rose, but Brianna pulled her back down. âThereâs more. Rush said you need a spell of protection and a language spell.â
âWhat sort of language spell?â
âShe said Latinâ¦and itâs a translation spell. Rush does not know any Latin, but for whatever reason, she wants to converse with you in that language. I know you know the Latin for spell casting, but she wants a conversation with you.â
âIn Latin.â
âYes.â
Cassandra sighed loudly. Was Rush also a player on this stage or did she, in fact, have something valuable to say and needed to do it in secret? She wished she could ask Ceara if ghosts had a timeline.
She doubted it.
She expected theyâd be outside of timeâ¦and thatâs why communicating with her was so important.
âOkay. Iâve not used that spell in forever. Letâs go back to the house so I can see the book.â
They walked for a moment, when Brianna turned to her. âYou want to talk about it?â
âNo, Thanks. I am as fine as one can be under the circumstances. Youâve not spoken to anyone else about this?â
âNot a living soul. What else can I do for you, Cass?â
Cassandra inwardly cringed. The real Brianna knew that calling her Cass made her butt pucker and her irritation flare up. Brianna never called her anything but Cassandra. âYouâve done a great deal already. Just keep my secrets and weâll be fine.â
âI can do that. Any idea where she might be?â
Cassandra rose. âNot one, but it sounds like Rush might know. Come on.
