Chapter Eight

The coven was awake and ecstatic to see Cassandra when she walked through the front door. Everyone wanted to know about her ‘Romantic getaway’ with Denny, but she told them there would be all sorts of storytelling after she had a nap. “You know…magical sex can be exhausting.”

Brianna escorted her up the stairs, and when the bedroom door closed, Brianna hugged her tightly. “Oh my god, I am so happy to see you.” She pulled back. “How are you, really? You look exhausted.”

Cassandra stared at the woman who, on another timeline, was her very best friend, but this woman? She was an imposter, and Cassandra needed to remember that. “I’m fine, really.”

“I spoke to Rush,” she whispered in Cassandra’s ear, still holding her closely. “Not here.”

Cassandra pulled back and studied Brianna’s eyes.

She was scared.

Truly afraid. But of what?

“The park, then.”

Brianna nodded and they left down the back stairwell.

As they walked to the park, Brianna reached for her hand.

Cassandra winced as she looked away and took Brianna’s hand. Brianna would never have reached for Cassandra’s hand… not in a million years. She knew how Cassandra felt about being touched without permission. This Brianna clearly did not know.

When they reached the park, they sat on a bench Cassandra used to sit in with Denny. God, how that felt like it was a hundred years ago.

“Rush did not wish to speak to me, Cassandra, but her agitation was palpable. All she kept saying was to send you to the Sorrel House as soon as you returned.”

Cassandra rose, but Brianna pulled her back down. “There’s more. Rush said you need a spell of protection and a language spell.”

“What sort of language spell?”

“She said Latin…and it’s a translation spell. Rush does not know any Latin, but for whatever reason, she wants to converse with you in that language. I know you know the Latin for spell casting, but she wants a conversation with you.”

“In Latin.”

“Yes.”

Cassandra sighed loudly. Was Rush also a player on this stage or did she, in fact, have something valuable to say and needed to do it in secret? She wished she could ask Ceara if ghosts had a timeline.

She doubted it.

She expected they’d be outside of time…and that’s why communicating with her was so important.

“Okay. I’ve not used that spell in forever. Let’s go back to the house so I can see the book.”

They walked for a moment, when Brianna turned to her. “You want to talk about it?”

“No, Thanks. I am as fine as one can be under the circumstances. You’ve not spoken to anyone else about this?”

“Not a living soul. What else can I do for you, Cass?”

Cassandra inwardly cringed. The real Brianna knew that calling her Cass made her butt pucker and her irritation flare up. Brianna never called her anything but Cassandra. “You’ve done a great deal already. Just keep my secrets and we’ll be fine.”

“I can do that. Any idea where she might be?”

Cassandra rose. “Not one, but it sounds like Rush might know. Come on.
