CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

The Curly Choir Girl

Jackson stood on the front doormat with his notebook still in his left hand after issuing Poodle-lady with an unfair warning for her constipated pooch. He raised his right eyebrow as Kit threw open the door. She beat him to the punch, lifting a hand to silence him. “Let me guess. Poodle-lady and Hedge-man called in a disturbance in suburbia. As you can see, there’s nothing exciting happening.” Kit jerked her head towards the lobby. “Alec is inside waiting to see you. His coffee is terrible.” She breezed past him and didn’t give him time to respond before jogging to her car and unlocking the door. Hedge-man had returned to butchering his camelia and a brown smear remained where Poodle-lady had collected the anonymous poop. Kit patted the Bug’s steering wheel as the engine turned over first time. “I don’t deserve your loyalty,” she crooned and pulled away from Alec’s street.

Jerry called again as she turned onto her mother’s road. Kit answered and his lyrical tenor boomed throughout the car. “Where are you?”

Kit blew out a breath and looked around her. “I just got to Mum’s house. I thought I’d break the news to her about the scissors. Lane will start looking for whoever owns those fingerprints and I need to make sure she has an alibi for the time of Debbie’s death. He’ll find Cindy’s too, but I don’t care what happens to her.” She crossed her fingers in her lap after pulling on the hand brake. “Kenny has a job now, so I’m hoping Mum went to one of her Bitch and Stitch groups. I’m not in the right frame of mind for a confession.”

Jerry made a sound like a humph. He cleared his throat. “I spoke to my father and asked his advice. He doesn’t think you need a barrister yet. For now, he advised that we just sit tight and do nothing to draw the cops’ attention. Stay home, behave and wait.”

Kit stared at the Bug’s ceiling and exhaled. “I can’t stay home, Jerry.” She remembered the unopened envelope in her pocket. “Danni came to find me. She gave me an envelope with cash for cutting her hair.”

“Nice. How much?”

“I don’t know. Maybe you could open it for me.” Kit gnawed on her lower lip. “I’m scared to see my worth in dollars.”

Jerry grunted. A click in the background muffled his voice. “Actually, I need a favour. Langdon booked me to speak at a school assembly at twenty past eleven. I need a helper.”

Kit made gagging noises and shook her head from side to side. “That sounds like the fourth level of Hell.”

Jerry lowered his voice to a whisper. “Please. I’m desperate. The little rug rats terrify me. I need a rear-guard.”

Kit stared at Marian’s empty driveway and groaned. “Mum isn’t here and I do kinda owe you for all your unofficial legal help.” She gnawed on the edge of her thumbnail before dropping it into her lap. “Okay. I’ll meet you there.
