The next day dawned bright and clear. I couldnât stop smiling in anticipation.
Cuan was driving the wagon heading north, and almost all my favorite people were traveling with me. I told the others that Cuan knew about Hella Mora, was a shaman, and would be coming with us.
The wagon ride was pleasant. I had my crochet, Kalahar had some new books Cuan had brought with him, and Stefan and Hashir were discussing Tolaga, the next stop on our sea voyage. Aki watched the landscape roll by. We could have put a cover on the wagon, but it wasnât raining, and we all wanted to see the highlands.
The gentle rocking of the wagon soothed me. As we went further north, the grasses changed to rust brown, and light yellow, with patches of soft greens.
âI want to apologize for my behavior up until now,â Cuan said, glancing at us from the driverâs seat. âI was a boorish ass.â
Hashir looked amused. âAnd now youâve come to see the error of your ways?â
Cuan gestured at the sweeping hills and craggy rocks jutting up from the ground. âItâs a heavy thing, to leave oneâs homeland.â
âYou donât have to leave.â Stefan looked scandalized, his heavy green woolen coat almost swallowing him whole.
âWe would never ask that of you.â
Cuan looked at me with such a soft expression it took my breath away. âYou donât meet a woman like Nova but once in your life.â
Hashir squeezed me against him. âThatâs for damn sure.â
âSo, why were you acting like Kalahar has leprosy?â Aki shot a look at Cuan. âSince weâre having honesty hour.â
Kalahar shook his head. âDonât push him, Aki.â
Aki crossed his arms. He almost lookedâ¦defensive of the phoenix spirit. It was all I could do to stifle my glee. Aki already enjoyed Hashirâs attention, and now Kalahar was in his sights.
My greedy little omega heartâ¦and other placesâ¦was excited at the idea of these men wanting each other enough to make taking them all to bed at the same time a pleasure.
âI see hisâ¦â Cuan waved. âI donât know what itâs called.â
âYou can see Kalaharâs fiery phoenix wings, since youâre a shaman.â Aki gestured at Kalaharâs shoulders.
âYou can see his wings? Without him manifesting them?â I looked between Aki and Cuan.
âYes.â They said at the same time. Kalahar looked amused.
I pouted. âI wish I could see them.â
âYou have but to ask.â Kalahar gave me a burning intense look, and my stomach swooped.
Kalaharâs body shifted. His hair became living fire again, his eyes swirls of red and orange, his skin golden, and fiery wings curled around his body.
Cuan watched him with a mixture of fear and wonder. âIt was like another form laid over the face you showed the world.â
I glanced around at the other men. âWeâre working on researching spirits.â
âSpeaking ofâ¦â Stefan pointed to our left.
In the distance, over the red and gold fields, a large herd of elk walked placidly toward the north. A normal enough sight, but they all shone with white-blue light. And then, behind the last elk in line, more elk appeared, streaming out of nothing I could see.
