The driver slowed, downshifting, and flipped his turn signal on. The bottle-green Mercedes 350 SL moved obediently into the right turn lane. Lafite County Fairgrounds, said the small sign. He made the turn onto the narrow blacktop road, and wound his way through the empty fairground streets.

The rain had stopped a while ago and the blacktop was drying, but puddles here and there had wet the tires of cars going through them, and Phil, figuring the traffic had been bound for the horse show, turned a corner to follow the trail.

He was a tall, runner-thin, dark individual in a silver-gray suit set off with a densely-flowered tie. He wore gold-rimmed glasses set halfway down his noble nose, and had an unlit cigar tucked into a corner of his mouth. His curly hair had a lot of individual gray hairs in it.

He found a space in the parking lot beside the arena and got out. In one hand was a big, worn attaché case. He was Phillip Bannister, Danny's father. A talented criminal defense lawyer, he was frequently a thorn in the side of the Charter Police Department, which didn't mean Peter hesitated to call him when his wife's employee needed help.

Phil walked up to the yellow ribbon that barred entrance to the barn, produced identification and said with gentle authority to the weightlifter guarding the entrance, "I am here to represent Miss Brittany Morgan. Please notify the person in charge of this investigation that I wish to speak with Miss Morgan, and if there is any interrogation ongoing, it must stop immediately."
