It turned out to be a woman outside baggage claim holding a sign that read “Grant.”

“I didn’t know you hired a car,” said Rachel.

“I didn’t.”

The sign holder wasn’t a limo driver, but one of the Seventeenth Precinct detectives sent by Lieutenant Harris, a one-woman welcoming committee to escort them back to his office.

She also happened to be the detective that Frankel had ditched a few nights earlier by climbing out the precinct’s bathroom window, and consequently made it clear that she wasn’t going to let his fiancée and soon-to-be father-in-law out of her sight until she’d delivered them to the Seventeenth.

Unfortunately, that was the only information the Grants were able to extract from Detective Dunham. So they sat silently in the back seat of the unmarked sedan as it worked its way on the LIE back to the city.

It was shortly before noon when Dunham deposited them in Desmond Harris’s office. She told them that the lieutenant and Detective Meadows would be with them shortly. Dunham pointed out that the windows were double locked and didn’t possess any sort of ledge—just in case they were thinking of replicating Detective Frankel’s exit.

Grant thanked her for the intel and watched her walk out the door.

He realized it had already been half a day since John Frankel had disappeared in the Maine night, and that as each hour passed without anyone hearing from him, he looked increasingly guilty and was solidifying himself as NYPD’s prime suspect.

“Did you try texting that number again?” Grant asked.

“Once an hour, like you suggested. Nothing.”

“He must figure that the police are monitoring your mobile. I’d imagine that burner phone currently resides somewhere deep in the Maine forest by now.”

“Then how are we supposed to get in touch with him?”

“John’s an enterprising young man. I’m sure when he wants to reach out to you, he’ll find a way.”

Grant noticed this didn’t placate his daughter, but he didn’t have a chance to say more as the office door opened. Lieutenant Desmond Harris and Detective Taryn Meadows walked in. Neither looked happy nor appeared to have slept much.

“How was Hawaii?” asked the lieutenant as he settled behind his desk.

“Under normal circumstances, it would have been quite lovely,” quipped Grant. “I did enjoy the luau I attended.”

“You’ll forgive me if I don’t ask what you had for dinner or if you managed to get in any swimming. I’m much more interested if you’ve been in touch with Detective Frankel recently.”

“Since he told us yesterday that he was in Maine?” Grant shook his head. “Not since then, no.”

Taryn, who’d settled on the desk’s edge, leaned forward. “So, you have been in touch.”

“Sporadically,” answered Grant. He sensed Rachel’s eyes on him and gave her the slightest nod, hopefully indicating that she should fall into step alongside him. “My daughter even relayed the message you left with Ms. Crowe.”

“I told John that you wanted to talk to him again; otherwise, you were going to issue a warrant for his arrest,” confirmed Rachel.

“Obviously, circumstances have changed in the past few hours,” said Harris.
