Do I want my opponent to fold?

Do I want them to call all-in?

Can I win a showdown?

Do I want to see another card?

Do I want them to see another card?

How will they respond to each of my potential choices?

How is this going to play out?

That last one is important. It’s the one I ask myself all the time when I am in this zone. How is this going to play out? And how do I want it to play out?

Don’t just make a guess and fling some chips in, or check and hope they check behind. It’s easy to be ruled by what we hope for. Worrying about things we can’t control costs brainpower we could be using for other things and it causes us to make plays based on hope rather than solid reasoning.

So don’t do it. Use logic, not emotions. You can have emotions once the tournament is over. Save them. Use logic and make the most profitable decision now. If you do, I promise the emotions after the tournament will be easier to handle knowing that you made the right choice, even if you lose.

There are a few “rules” that can help you make better decisions in this zone, and in poker tournaments in general. They will keep you out of trouble. They are not hard and fast, but they are strong guidelines that you should always remember.
