Vernon Miller was a bright student who went from Lafayette High to college in Seattle. There he’d worked freelance for tech companies around the West Coast, an engineering job in networking. A geek. One so obscure he might never have been written about again.

Except he joined the National Guard Reserves, a decision that provided a story and a picture for the News-Ledger when he took part in an annual military readiness event at Camp Grayling, Michigan, just three months before Mia Buckingham and Scott Sorrell had their fatal assignation by Mohawk Lake. There Vern was, just twenty-two, manning some kind of artillery position, looking the part next to the long barrel of the weapon: tough, determined, macho. Son of local cop proves patriotic too. Free copy. Free photo. Just the kind of thing Jeff McAllister liked to fill the pages of his rag.

Just the kind of thing that made Honeyman think that, even with Lauren’s stolen handgun, the two of them weren’t much of a match for Vern Miller.

The photos of Mia in the shack bothered him too, especially their provenance. Between advertising, editorial and accounting, the News-Ledger employed eight people, two of them part-time. Jeff McAllister had been feeling unusually generous when the offer of a prize promotion came in, along with some hefty discounts if he wanted to spread some more around. Pretty much everyone in the office had gotten one. Cheaper than a pay raise, Honeyman guessed. Jeff himself… he had some fancy Nikon DSLR. A real newsman’s camera, he said, not that McAllister was even close to being that. The cops knew he was one of Mia Buckingham’s lovers. The stains on her sheets left no doubt there. But he had that alibi: a girlfriend in the country. The Feds had checked it out. If they believed Jeff then maybe…

Honeyman typed ‘Casio’ into the search field for the News-Ledger database and got six stories up on the screen. Four were plugs for the contest, one an uncritical review for the camera. The last a list of the winners.

‘Jesus,’ Honeyman whispered. ‘Who’d have guessed?’
