CHAPTER 15

E ight months have passed since he asked me to bear with him, I now I know a lot more about Dan. After our talk, I shared my concerns not only with Poppy, but also with Lou, explaining that I wondered whether I was being naïve. Did Dan Pate pose a threat to me, my son, or my friends? Should I break off my relationship with Dan?

The two men did their best to vet my new boyfriend. Their early efforts hit brick walls. Eventually Poppy’s military background was put to good use. My grandfather came to visit one night and while we walked on the beach, he explained to me that Dan has made himself permanently available to our government for special assignments.

Poppy warned me, “These can vary. There’s all sorts of things. What you need to know is that these might not be the sort of role that he can discuss with a civilian. He is honorable, he serves his country, and his skills are unique.”

“Is there anything else you can tell me?” I’d asked.

Poppy screwed up his mouth, a sure sign he was deciding how much to share. I waited him out.

“Well,” he started, “whenever a war breaks out, you got a boatload of trigger pullers. They’re untrained, undisciplined, and hot to take action. What you need are highly trained soldiers who understand there’s more to resisting an enemy than shooting at them. That’s where a smart guy like Dan comes in. He sets up frameworks for intelligence gathering, resource allocation, and logistics tracking. That there fellow of yours is one tough hombre. You ought to be proud to know him.”

That rang true.

A few days later, Lou told me, “Dan’s got a background in the military. The LEOs in Tampa have a domestic call on record. His wife was screaming and tossing dishes at a wall until a neighbor phoned the police. Dan wasn’t hurt, hadn’t touched his spouse, and wasn’t charged. He was sober and respectful. She was a complete nightmare. I also checked with a pal who’s on the school board in Jupiter, and Dan passed their scrutiny with flying colors.”

I introduced my new boyfriend to my crew at a get-together to celebrate Lou’s birthday. Honora had been invited, but she declined because Evelynn had other plans. Skye had planned to surprise her husband at their apartment. We all hid behind furniture and jumped out to yell, “Happy Birthday!” But the biggest shock was how MJ took to Dan. She could barely stop drooling. “You didn’t tell me he’s a god,” she’d hissed into my ear. I rolled my eyes. I was accustomed to her going gaga over guys.

Skye and Lou knew a little about Dan, because Lou had checked him out at my request. They took to Dan right away. As for Pete? Well, to get Pete’s attention, you needed four legs and a fur coat.

The evening was a huge success, thanks in part to a weird board game we played where you had to guess phrases.
