CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Noisy Rattling Trucks

"Captain Jenkins, sir. There must be thirty or more dark small trucks going around town making sounds like you described," said the deputy on the phone.

Two witnesses, Minnie and Emer had observed a small, dark, noisy truck, either onsite or going down the road.

"How do you come to that conclusion, deputy?" said Jenkins.

"Sir, all our vehicles, cars, trucks, and vans have been driving around Clear River for the past few days. When we hear a noisy one, we stop it; check the driver's license, and the vehicle registration papers, as well as take a picture of the vehicle and its license plate. We also make notes as to what the noise sounds like, and from what part of the truck it is coming."

"Excellent. Get all of this information together as a package. Give it to one of the IT people in Thompson. They can set it up as a spreadsheet, or, better, a searchable database. We may find a use for it later."

"Yes, sir."

"And, keep driving around, looking for others. Anything may provide us with clues that might help with the Atwater site murder investigation."

"Sir, do we have a budget and mileage for this? We are getting heat from some of our supervisors. They want us working on their turf."

"Deputy, that is none of your concern. If there are problems with your supervisors, have them contact me or Sheriff Johnson. This is a murder investigation, not a traffic stop. Got that? Get it done. And, one more thing, only include small dark trucks in the data package you get to IT, no large ones."

"Understood, sir."

Jenkins thought, wondering what Sheriff Johnson's reaction would be to using a computerized database to possibly help resolve the investigation.

He laughed quietly to himself.

Johnson was a computer illiterate. Didn’t know a digital byte from a bite of a sandwich. He hated failing "walls of fire". An unknown individual had in the past often broken into the Mann County Sheriff's Office's computer system, embarrassing him by resolving a crime before his staff did. Jenkins frequently had to calm him down and tell him that they were called firewalls, not “walls of fire”.
