Chapter Fifteen

One by one, the guards had training in how to handle the slightly heavier tridents, and also in how to produce sea-fire from them.

The trick to it was relatively simple. Calder, after coaching from Fabian, explained to his guards that they had to stop thinking about what they were trying to do and simply treat the tridents like extensions of their bodies. In no time at all the majority of the guards could conjure sea-fire at will.

Naturally, there were a few mishaps amongst the guards, though thankfully nothing fatal. The worst injury was to one of the guard’s hands. No one had quite anticipated the long range of the sea-fire and a strong blast from the two mermen training behind him had caught him during his own practice. From that point on, only two guards trained with the tridents at a time and everyone else made sure to stay well out of the line of fire.

Calder, despite Marin’s complaints, refused to let him even touch one of the tridents. Marin, along with a new recruit who had recently come to the city, who barely knew how to hold a weapon, stuck to the more conventional spears.

As the rest of the guards became used to their tridents, it wasn’t unusual to see flashes of blue light around the barracks at any time of day.

After a short while Calder agreed the mermen guarding the sea dragons should be armed with tridents. After all, it would be little use having them trained with the weapons if the tridents were back in the barracks when the goddess woke.
