Morgan

Worry wormed its way through me as I approached the back of the kitchens, and I feared I'd been taken for a fool. Especially as there didn't seem to be anyone there.
Had Gus lied to me? He didn't feel like the type but it wasn't like I was a great judge of character. If no one turned up, then I was just going to have to make a break for it myself. I couldn't stand the idea of going back to my room, defeated a second time.
A light flicked on and I ducked behind a low wall. It seemed unlikely that Father had noticed I was missing already, but it was better to act like everyone was out for me. Then again, I supposed that was true. Most people at the Nest would turn me in if they realised I was trying to escape.
My heart was pounding out of my chest as I snuck towards the entrance. If this was some sort of set-up, I was a real fool for walking in it, but I didn't want to regret not trying.
I checked around me as I reached the meeting point to make sure no one was watching and then headed into the shadows. I had no idea precisely what I was supposed to do now, but staying out of sight seemed like a good start. Pinky's claws dug into my shoulder as she kept herself perched up, a familiar comfort. At least she'd seemed to grasp the seriousness of the situation and wasn't making any noise.
A dull thud behind me made me jump and I turned around, my hands raised in front of me as I tried to work out the best way to defend myself.
The door cracked open every so slightly. "Morgan?" a voice whispered.
I cleared my throat. "Yes."
"Get inside." The door opened enough for me to slip in and closed quickly behind me.
I blinked a few times as my eyes adjusted to the lack of light inside the room, but it soon became possible to make out the shapes around me. I looked between the strangers, disappointed to find that Gus wasn't here yet.
A guy with spiky hair and a goldfinch in a small cage held his hand out. "I'm Jack. Did you bring the medical supplies?"
"Yes." I reached into my badly packed bundle of stuff and handed him two small bottles of morphine. "I have more but I'm going to hold onto those until we're out of here." There was no way I was going to give them everything I had when there was no guarantee that they'd get me out of here.
Maybe that wasn't a good way to act when it came to making friends but I couldn't just hand over my supplies and risk them leaving without me. Especially if one of them found out who I was. I felt guilty for not telling them what they signed up for, but this was my best chance. These people knew the grounds, the weak spots, the routines.
