Chapter Twenty-Two

I’D JUST GOTTEN A FIRSTHAND glimpse of how smooth Agent Mark Steel was at manipulating people. He’d made it seem as if he’d been in control of the zombie all along. Only our team members knew I’d been giving the undead man his orders.

Colton hurried over to his pride and they moved to surround him protectively. If they’d been in their wereforms, their hackles would have been raised and their tails would have been lashing in agitation. The werewolves and other shifters were grinning nastily. It seemed there was no love lost between the various groups.

“If the drama is over, we have the final test to perform!” the werewolf trainer barked. “Now that the obstacles have been added to the course, the leaders of each pack will now take to the track,” he added, then pointed at me. “You’ll be racing against them, agent.”

“She’s not an alpha,” a female werewolf said in disdain as the redheaded wolf turned to survey me again.

“If one more soldier opens their mouth, you’ll all be doing a thousand laps around the oval!” the werebear trainer shouted. Silence fell at that threat. We might be fast and fit, but that sounded like a pretty harsh punishment to me.

Seven army jeeps were lined up side by side on the racing track. The barriers would force us into single file in a few places. It would be a race to see who could be in the lead. The werewolf trainer directed the leaders from the six groups towards the vehicles. I was given the seventh jeep. It had a stick shift, which I’d never used before. “I don’t know how to drive this,” I said to the werebear when she followed me over to the jeep.

“It’s easy,” she told me and quickly explained how to use the gears and the extra pedal.

“Prepare to be utterly humiliated when you come last, mongrel,” Colton said from the jeep next to mine.

My eyes narrowed, then I buckled myself in. We were given a couple of minutes to adjust the seats and mirrors, then we were ordered to start the engines. I did so and smiled when I revved the motor. The jeep was different to the other vehicles I’d driven so far. A competitive streak I’d never known I possessed surged to life when Colton gunned his engine. His supreme confidence that he would win made me determined to at least not come last.

I looked past the werecat to see the alpha werewolf looking at me. He flicked a look at the Rex and gave me a conspiratorial grin. I nodded slightly to indicate I was on board with the idea of tanking the feline’s chances of winning, then the werebear shouted at us to go.

Slamming my foot on the gas, I shot forward like a rocket. My six competitors were just as fast and we were neck and neck. It took me a few seconds to get used to changing gears and I fell a bit behind. Finding
