“Titus, you don’t have to break down the door.”

I rolled my eyes and looked at Olivia. Her orgasm in the spring water had done her good. She seemed refreshed and healthy, more pleasant than she had been even before the bite of the aeterni.

I did that for her.

My chest expanded with pride, and I huffed out a breath to make sure I did not feel quite so pleased with myself.

I stepped back. “How will the proprietor of this establishment know that we are here if we do not announce our presence?”

Olivia waved her magic black square at me. “Watch this.”

She held the square up to the door. A high-pitched noise and a click followed, and the door opened.

I stared at her. “And you are not a sorceress?”

She laughed. “No. Just good at using my phone.”

We stepped inside the establishment.

Olivia had explained that the dues and fees were paid by her errant advisor’s monies, but I still did not approve.

I wanted to be the one who provided for her.

And no other.

We walked inside the domicile. It was small. Olivia had called it a ‘villa,’ but the term meant a much larger abode in my head. This one only had two floors, a place to prepare food, and some sitting areas.

One area to sleep.

Olivia tossed the bag down on the bed and sat next to it. “I’m beat. I think I’m going to sleep. Do you…” her voice trailed off, and I saw a blush creep up her cheeks.

She wanted to ask if I would join her.

The wolf urged me to say yes.

But I could not.

“I believe I will keep watch,” I announced. “The small space downstairs is adequate.”

I could sense her disappointment, but I left before it made me change my mind. I went down the stairs and attempted to sit on the piece of furniture Olivia had called a ‘sofa.’

I did not sleep.

I did not need to.

Eventually, I climbed the stairs again to check whether Olivia had dozed. I had rested enough, it seemed, for many centuries, and I felt no need to sleep as I watched Olivia do so. Tonight, instead of the restless or sexual dreams that she had so frequently, her sleep was peaceful.

I left her in the room. If I were to linger, I would find myself waxing poetic over the moonlight on her skin. The way the starlight seemed to catch and glimmer in the threads of her hair. The way…

Shut up.

I snarled at myself.

Shut up. Shut up. Shut up. I had already done too much. I could feel the mating bond between us. It wanted to take hold, to connect us, body, soul, and magic, until we could not see where one of us began and the other one ended.

I couldn’t let that happen.

I did not belong here. I did not belong in this time.

And I did not belong with Olivia.

Mate, the wolf chuffed.

No. I do not have a mate. I will not have a mate.

I would not risk what happened when a mate died.
