Chapter Five

The streets bustled with people moving to and fro, conversations overlapping and overwhelming Talatha as she pressed through them. When they’d left the inn, she’d instructed the others to stay put, hoping that if just three of them left, it would bring far less notice to the group. The market was in full force this day. Well-dressed fellows led entourages through the tables, hurried merchants carried baskets and bags of their wares through the throng.

Even as they pushed through the crowd, Talatha was relieved they didn’t stand out amongst the other travelers visiting the capital. Given that it was the center and the most important city in all of Lindrad, Talatha had forgotten how often visitors came to the town in search of the best stock in anything or to find their next adventure. Her eyes caught a woman wearing thick fur, the animal skin covering her from head to foot. Talatha grimaced, feeling hot just by looking at her.

Another man walked around almost naked, his chest bare and his bottom half covered only by a small skirt of cloth and mail. He carried a narrow spear tied to his back by a leather cord.

“I’m thinking we should reconsider our wardrobe back in Terris Green. If we have the option of being bare, why wear any clothes?” Lancevin said, chuckling.

Alsry shot him a death look, giving her opinion on the matter without even having to speak words.

“I’d like to see you face Watchlight in that garb. They’d cut you head to foot without so much as a blink,” she replied.

“Come now, Als, I’m quicker on my feet than that, even you’ve seen me with a Conjured spear,” he said, patting the woman on the back.

Alsry raised her hand, Moving Lancevin’s palm back, his entire arm wreathed in blue Light.

“Stop that!” Talatha hissed, her eyes scanning the surrounding people. With the thickness of the crowd, she hoped no one saw Alsry’s brazen use of Lightbearing in public. “You want to get us kicked out of here? Lanser’s sake, keep your Light hidden.”

She hated berating them, but Lightbearing had become nothing more than a myth, or at least people acted as if that were the case. During their journeys to extract Lightbearers from the rest of the population, Talatha and the others could often do so without too much consequence. Sometimes, however, Watchlight would be there.

Lightbearing was exposed then.

When none of the surrounding passersby paid any extra attention to their presence, Talatha relaxed. People moved and bumped into her, the contact creating a rising panic inside of her. All it would take was a subtle attack from anyone in the throng for Talatha and her companions to be overcome. Based on the lack of black-garbbed Watchlight members, she didn’t detect any immediate threat. Still, her breath increased and her heart thumped in her chest, the feeling resonating into her head.

Pressure in her chest urged her to move on. They still had no idea when this boy would Awaken, let alone to what.
