26: The Lucky Peasant

This was a terrible idea, and Christina knew it. Not only was the village tavern filled to the brim with paladins, none of them looked remotely happy.

The group—minus the Silencer, Alador, and Jax—sat around a cramped table at the Lucky Peasant trying to make space for each other and trying even harder to avoid looking any of the heavily armored paladins in the eye. It was a rather daunting task since most of the paladins were trying to catch their attention.

“We stick out like a sore thumb,” Kel said as their meals arrived.

A harried-looking woman set a bowl of broth with a few pieces of what Christina thought might be chicken and some shavings of vegetables in front of each of them along with a very small slice of bread. They had also all been given small mugs of warm mead. They probably should have seen that as an honor, especially since the tavern owner hadn’t seemed particularly interested in giving them a room or serving them a meal when they’d first walked in.

“Well,” Lenay said as she picked up her spoon and began to eat. “I’m not going to complain about something warm. Even if it is weak soup.”

“Be grateful there’s any left!” the tavern woman said, as she returned to put a few wedges of cheese in the middle of their table. “We’re running out with all of these paladins here. They keep coming and eating without bringing us any more supplies.”

“All of our supplies are going to the war effort!” one of the men said. He banged his fist on the table. “Be happy for our coins!”

The tavern worker mumbled something under her breath as she walked back toward the kitchen and didn’t return for a while.

“We’ll ask about a horse and buggy in the morning,” Eileen said.

“After sleeping in a bed tonight?” Artemis said.

Christina shrugged. “I don’t think we’re all going to fit in that room,” she said. “But I’ll fight someone for a bed if I have to.”

They had been shown small quarters where two bunk beds were positioned next to a hearth—it was the best they could get. One of them would have to sleep on the floor. And Christina was adamant that she should get first pick of the beds since she had paid for the room in the first place.

“We’ll be on our way first thing in the morning,” Eileen said. “Let’s just eat and see what supplies we can get when we wake up.”

“And what way is that?” the man who had banged his hand on the table asked as he turned around to face the group.

Christina took a big breath. This was going to be delicate.

“Up toward Weapool,” she said. “I’m trying to establish a trade route between Galorast and the Sundered Lands.”

The man gave her an appraising look. He looked no older than thirty, but he wore his armor and his dubious expression well.

“With the dwarves, you say?” he asked. “Trading with our shorter friends would have a lot of benefits.
