A Study In Clockwork

An Unexpected Parcel At Baker Street

As I reminisce over these cases of my friend Sherlock Holmes, I realise how tragic and horrifying some of these events were. I note that on many of these occasions it put Holmes and me on the verge of death from which we barely escaped. These affairs, however, were singularly unique and yet so intrinsically linked that I could not share one without the other. While, at the same time, the official public records regarding these cases have been incredibly distorted to a point that some readers may believe this telling to be nothing more than a piece of dramatised fiction. Of one thing I can assure the public, these events are true. I still carry with me the scars from this affair, and if one uses the great powers of deduction, which my good friend Mr Sherlock Holmes employs, one will be able to see the cracks and holes within the official statements. Though, I never fully understood how Holmes could be at peace with such weak testimonies, which were mostly void of his assistance, flooding the newsagents. For Holmes though, if the puzzle was complete in his mind, there was nothing more that needed to be done. Nevertheless, an undeniable fact stands firm; had it not been for Mr Sherlock Holmes, a reign of terror would have descended upon England and rapidly spread like an infectious poison consuming all Europe and, perhaps, the globe.

It was on the morning of the eighteenth of May 1899 when I sat in the study reading a recent medical journal. Holmes had been in and out for several weeks staying up late and eating next to nothing. I always found his mood to be somewhat intolerable when he became so enticed with an investigation. As I sat there and read, he burst into the study with a great shout.

“Watson! After weeks of careful study and in-depth research, I have begun to unravel the mystery! I have pulled the thread that will lead us to the most stunning and yet obvious conclusion.” He threw his arms about as he walked around the study.

“Mr Holmes, do try to keep it down, it is rather early for all this shouting,” said Mrs Hudson standing in the door.

“Woman, please, this is no time for interruptions!” Holmes exclaimed.

“Well, I beg your pardon, but there is a package for you at the door,” she informed. “When I answered the knock no one was there, but a large box, too heavy for me to carry, has been left with your name.”

“Curious, Watson, come help me fetch it then,” said Holmes. Outside the front door was, indeed, a large wooden container. It stood about four feet high and two feet wide. Holmes and I each took a side and began to lift. With great effort we hefted it from the ground and carried it inside.

“Good Lord, Holmes! What is inside this?” I asked.

“I’m not sure. Once we get it into the study I’ll examine it,” he replied.
