THE CURIOUS CASE OF ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE, BY SHERLOCK HOLMES, CONSULTING DETECTIVE

AS TOLD BY GARY LOVISI

I, Sherlock Holmes, take up my pen in firm resolve to put to paper some items that have concerned me of late, and which I feel need to be aired. The topic concerns the relationship with Mr. Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle surely is a complicated man, much like myself, so I do understand the type, and for that reason I have over the years allowed him certain liberties with Watson’s writings and words detailing my life and work. However, now, since he has prompted Watson to bring me back to life again—although with the utmost reluctance—the problem has come to a head and I can remain silent no longer. I feel I must put these words to paper for posterity.

After much thought and reflection, I have come to the truth of the matter between us, and that is, I have been abominably treated by Mr. Doyle over the many years of my long career and our association. While I am naturally thankful for his work as literary agent and of ensuring my story be told—through the goodly Watson—there is a deeper aspect to our relationship that has been left unspoken, until now.

I feel I have been ill-treated by Mr. Doyle. First he watched as Watson placed me in all types of dangerous situations and he gave me every manner of seemingly impossible crime to solve. And I did! I solved them all! Did I ever complain? I even cherished the challenges. However, while all this was going on he spoke a never-ending barrage of harsh words about me over a period of many years—he even said he despised me! I who never said an ill word about him! Then the worst insult of all—he finally suggested that Watson kill me! However, even in death Doyle’s animus to me did not abate, as he often spoke harshly about me after my demise.

This is a problem that has been building up between us for a long time now and it peaked my curiosity upon my resurrection not long after Watson brought me back to life. At the time Doyle’s words shocked me greatly as I noticed how he often spoke of how deeply he hated me—he even said he “despised” me. Even more shocking, he was quite open about his negative feelings towards me—while in the same breath he spoke glowingly of his own historical novels and their characters—Loring of The White Company, or Michah Clarke. As if they were in the same category as myself. Was he serious?

Doyle’s vast calumny against me only grew over the years and I could not understand it. It hurt me deeply. After all he had a hand in creating me—I did not create him! Or did I! I sometimes wonder? My cases certainly did make his writing career. Some might even say that Sherlock Holmes was the creator of Mr. Doyle—the author!

When Doyle desired that I was killed off at the height of my career I could hardly believe it.
