“He wants to ask us questions,” Tanya yelled in her ear.
“I’ll try to be quick. Did any of you touch the trunk or the deceased?”

He was met with stubborn silence.
Kate made a face at Pru.
Pru ignored her.
The chief heaved a sigh. “Take them all downtown and print them.”
His three officers stared back at him, wide-eyed, as a burst of outraged voices split the air.
“Brandon,” Kate said under her breath.
“You don’t think one of us murdered that poor man,” Pru demanded.
The chief flinched. “It’s merely procedure. In order to distin-guish your prints from any others that might be there.”
“You’ll be helping the investigation,” said Rayette, jumping in.
“You might even get your names in the paper—”
The chief gave her his winning scowl.
“—And afterward, the officers will drive you to the café for lunch.” Rayette grinned at the chief. “As Chief Mitchell’s guests.”
Round-eyed astonishment from the GABS competed with barely concealed exasperation from the chief.
“Why would he do that?” Alice asked suspiciously.
“To show his appreciation for your cooperation.”
“And the chief of police is paying?” yelled Carrie Blaine.
“Deaf as a post except when it comes to someone else’s nickel,”
whispered Pru.
“Yes.” Rayette turned to the chief. “I’ll put it on your tab.”
Brandon looked startled, but merely said, “Certainly,” then he turned and went back inside.
“Does he have a tab at the café?” Kate asked Rayette under her breath.
“He does now. Come along ladies, I have a nice potato soup and crab cakes special today.”

Kate was wondering if he meant for her to go with the others, when she heard a sharp, “Ms. McDonald.”
She had her answer. “Yes, Chief Mitchell.”
“Since your fingerprints are already on file, would you mind answering a few questions?”
Kate’s cheeks burned. He’d tricked her into leaving her fingerprints when she’d been his number one suspect in the professor’s murder. It still rankled.
“Certainly.” She walked toward him, but hesitated at the steps.
“I don’t suppose you want to go back inside.”
Kate shook her head, though she didn’t want to stand out in the cold, either.
The chief reached inside his shirt pocket for his pad and pen.
He wasn’t wearing a coat and his knuckles were already turning red from the few minutes he’d been outside.
“I guess the outer hall will be okay,” she said.
The chief nodded and practically pushed her up the steps to the door.
“Jesus, it’s cold,” he said as soon as they were in the foyer.
“This is nothing. It’s been a mild winter.”
“Oh, great.” He pulled a folding chair near the door and motioned for her to sit. Kate noticed that he’d left the door ajar for the fresh air and she silently thanked him for it.
He pulled another chair over and sat down across from her, his ankle crossed over the other knee, his pen poised.
He didn’t have to ask her questions—she’d done this before.
