As with most of our battles, there are legislative solutions to protect our right to choose. The challenge is, there really isn’t a single, clean piece of legislation that would solve our problems here. When I asked her for the magic answer, Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, told me in a personal communication:

The radical right has long used women’s ability to get pregnant and bear children as a means to control our position in society and maintain systems of power dominated by men. They’ve been smart about how they have done this using every means at their disposal—courts, state and federal legislators, and advancing cultural narratives on how women should behave and what should happen to those of us who refuse to comply. There’s no silver bullet to assuring full reproductive freedom and justice. It’s going to take discipline to change laws, change experiences for women everywhere, and above all change attitudes so women are lauded for charting their own course in life.
