CHAPTER IX

When Richard Sheridan died in mysterious circumstances fifteen months before, John Savage had warned his daughter, “Don’t make any statements without getting legal advice.” Now her husband was saying practically the same thing.

“Why did Miss Grey telephone you in the first place and ask you to come earlier than the others?” he insisted.

“I suppose she wanted to talk to me.”

“You know she wanted to talk to you. Was it about the letters?”

“How do I know? I didn’t see her.”

“Oh, don’t be so stupid, Hatty. Of course you knew what she wanted to see you about. Use a little of your natural intelligence. The police are going to ask you all these questions. You want to be prepared.”

“Since I didn’t see her how can I be sure what she wanted? I can’t tell the police more than that. I know she’s dead, I know it was murder. Everyone in the neighbourhood knows that. And that’s all I can say.”

“Can you prove you didn’t get there at half past twelve?”

Hatty stared. “Well, of course. Mother and old Miss West were there when I arrived.”

“Oh yes. But can you prove where you were at, say, twelve-thirty? Don’t say you were at home, because I rang you up at twelve-fifteen and there was no reply.”

“Of course there wasn’t any reply. I was bogged down in Beggar’s Alley.”

“Did anyone see you there? Do think, Hatty. After all, the whole of Burlham wasn’t in Brightling.”

“Too bad none of them happened to be in the alley.”

“Did you speak of the breakdown to anyone before the girl’s body was found?”

“I never had the chance.”

“You might have said something to the committee while you were waiting for Miss Grey to appear.”

“Well, I didn’t. Mother would only have asked why I was going there early, and if you knew how sick you get of being asked questions…”

“You’re going to get a lot sicker before we’re through,” her husband warned her grimly. “You see, Ferrers may take the view that there was no breakdown, that you kept your twelve-thirty appointment, went out by the side door, and came back about twelve-fifty or whatever it was to establish your alibi.”

“I thought even police had to prove their theories.”

“Has it occurred to you they’ll find your letters?”

“It might be quite a good thing if they did. If I’d murdered her, I’d have removed them, wouldn’t I?” Impatiently she lighted a cigarette and threw the match on the carpet. “Why do lawyers always have to look on the black side of things?” she demanded. “I wasn’t there, so no one can prove I was. Of course, if I’d known she was going to get herself knifed I’d have provided myself with an alibi.”

“Had she any hold over you beside the letters?”

“Don’t you think they’re enough? Tell me, suppose I admitted to you that I did know more than I’ve said, what would your reaction be? No, I really want to know. Would you throw me to the wolves in the sacred name of
