Blake jerked out of a half-sleep as her phone trilled in her pocket. She reached automatically forward, wincing as the action caused nerve endings in her burned forearm to cry out in agony. As her eyes came back into focus, she realized that they were only about a minute away from the station in Northern Pines.

“You shouldn’t have let me fall asleep,” she muttered to Melissa as she answered the call.

Her partner said nothing in response. But Blake could almost hear the knowing roll of the woman’s eyes. She was exhausted. They both were, but Blake was also suffering from the physical aftereffects of her brush with death earlier that day.

Blake answered the call, glancing at the screen but not recognizing the number before she said tightly, “Larsen.”

“Lieutenant Larsen?” a gruff male voice asked. “Lieutenant Blake Lawson with the Northern Pines Police Department.”

“The one and only. Who’s calling?”

“Name’s Keaton. Captain Sidney Keaton. I run the CIU down here in Pitt County.”

For a moment, Blake’s mind was empty. Where the hell was Pitt County? At first she thought it had something to do with her parents’ case and former CID agent Skip Hobson.

“I understand you requested information about the murders of Mandy Yates and Hannah Sanders.”

Comprehension hit her like a speeding truck. She felt her chest tighten with anticipation. “That’s right. Thanks for calling, Captain.”

“No problem. This have something to do with the case you’re working over there? Didn’t put two and two together until your partner sent over that request for information, but—what’s her name? Nina something?”

“Crawford.”

“That’s right. Crawford. She looks just like they did. A little older, sure, but the resemblance is there.”

The car rocked as Melissa spun the wheel and guided it over the sidewalk into the parking lot to the front of the station. Out of the corner of her eye, Blake saw a small press pack snapping photos and shooting B-reel footage. She recognized the face of Aaron Weller, but nobody else.

“Captain Keaton, right?”

“Call me Sid.”

“Listen, Sid. You know how it is,” Blake said as Melissa guided the car into a space. As her partner killed the engine, she shot her a look that said, I’ll see you inside.

“You can’t comment on an active investigation,” Sid chuckled. “And sure as shit not one with the Bureau’s fingerprints all over it. I’m not asking you to. Listen, if you think there’s a connection between your case and my cold ones, I’ll tell you whatever you want to know. Those two stuck with me.”

“Tell me about them.”

Melissa’s door swung shut behind her and her partner disappeared into the station. Blake looked out through the windshield and listened to Sid emit a heavy sigh.

“There’s not much to tell. I’m guessing you’ve read the case files. I was a detective back then, still with Pitt County Sheriff’s office. Ayden PD called us in after they found Hannah Sanders’ body, since they only had a part-time investigator who was more used to dealing with property crimes. Hannah was a student at East Carolina University.
