Matt

My muscles ache, my skin feels like it’s been dried out to the consistency of old leather, and all I want to do is sleep for three days.

It’s heaven.

I can’t remember the last time I had this much fun on a weekend. In Chicago, I’d usually be puttering around the condo or walking in the park with Katie because she was going stir crazy and said that she needed to get out of the house. And since we’ve moved here, I’ve had a honey-do list that feels like it’s never going to end.

Escaping with Brian for the day to just sit on a boat, fish, and drink beer actually makes me feel like I’m a person again. Add that to the fact that my date last night was incredible, and I don’t think that I could be happier.

Okay, there are a few things that I’d change if I could. I was a little irritated on my way to my date with Tiffany because Katie had a car for Henry delivered while I was at work. That meant that she’d already decided to give him one, even picked it out, before talking to me about it. I know that I should be grateful that she did all of the heavy lifting for me, but I can’t help but be a bit annoyed that she didn’t consult me.

Taking a deep breath, I push it from my mind. What Katie did is in the past and I can’t do anything to change it now. Even if I could, I don’t know that I honestly would. It’s done, the car is in our driveway, I didn’t have to do anything to make it happen, and Henry is over the moon. I had a great date, dinner and the hotel, and Katie seemed really happy that I got to have that alone time.

Hopefully that excitement will translate to some fun for the two of us later, but I might honestly be too sunburned even to move once we get the boat back on land.

“You are the best,” Brian announces, turning to look at me as he guides the boat up to the ramp. “Seriously, we drank, we fished, we talked. I hate it when I bring people out here and they don’t have anything to add to the conversation and don’t know how to hook a worm.”

“How does someone not know how to hook a worm?” I laugh, and he shakes his head, turning around to pay attention to what he’s doing. Brian honestly never shut up the entire time we were out here. All I had to do was agree every once in a while, and offer up some tidbits about Chicago, but that’s it.

It was like hanging out with someone you’ve known forever. There wasn’t any pressure to talk a lot and it was just really, really comfortable.

We get the boat out of the water and hooked back up behind the truck and then Brian drives away from the lake, jutting his thumb over his back to a second cooler tucked behind him.
