Unexpected developments. Send soonest Kelly weapon and copy personal report.

He added his name and wrote in the address of his hotel. He knew that he was, in one sense, asking for the moon by requesting the knife that had almost taken Jim Kelly's life. But for Slade's purpose a photograph would not serve.

When Borgiras came in the telegram was ready for sending. The French detective took it.

"This will go off at once," he promised. "Come, I have something to show you."

He led Slade down to a yard at the rear. In a shed a uniformed gendarme saluted the plain-clothes man and reached across a wide shelf to produce a piece of fire-blackened metal. The bright edges revealed how it had been cut from a larger sheet. But in the centre was a circular hole.

"Taken from the floor-board of the wrecked Jaguar," Borgiras said, with commendable pride. "We do not let grass grow when we walk, Monsieur Slade."

Slade gave a timid smile at the near-English cliché. He was staring at the piece of metal and noting that the hole would just about accommodate the velvet-lined cylinder he had found abandoned or forgotten by the missing Suzy Frontard.
