Chapter 13
"You didn't take my call," Forester said for what felt like the twentieth time.
Artemis sighed, massaging the bridge of her nose as she sat in the back of the car he'd borrowed. They were just north of Venice, moving slowly on old, crumbling streets.
Tommy now had the unloaded gun and had decided to regroup with them, to help protect his family.
Artemis hadn't thought this was a good idea, but Forester had refused to leave her side again. In the end, Tommy's constant insistence had worn her down.
She didn't like the thought that they might lead the mobsters right to Helen's doorstep, but on the other hand, perhaps keeping Tommy out of the way and on the down-low would be the best for everyone involved.
Now, though, she was weathering a different type of storm.
"I'm sorry," she said, the words now numb on her lips.
Forester's hand gripped the steering wheel, glaring through the windshield. His right arm was back in the sling, the cast visible in the glow from the moon extending through the windshield.
She loosed a small, sad sigh. "I wanted to keep you safe," she murmured.
"What was that?"
She repeated it, louder. He blinked and stared in the mirror, hesitating as if somehow something wasn't computing.
"Me?" He scowled. "That's my job. To keep you safe."
She glanced at him then back to her phone in her hand. "It's a two-way street, Cameron. I've dragged you halfway around the world. Put you in danger. I've ruined your job, and who knows if the FBI is after us or not."
"They are."
"Right."
"So?" he said.
She blinked. "So . . . I've ruined your life!" As she said it, it came with a burst of emotion, and her eyes welled up. She wasn't sure where the feelings were coming from, but she knew they were true.
Forester looked as if he'd been slapped. He didn't care about the phone she held. On the device, they'd been looking up Giroud and his statement on national television about hunting the four horsemen.
But while Artemis had been swiping on her device to find the video, the two of them both went still now. Lost in silence.
Cameron said, in a low, soft voice, "I hope you don't really believe that."
"Hmm?"
"You haven't ruined my life, Artemis. You've given it back to me."
He stared at her, meeting her eyes in the mirror. He had a soft expression now.
It was said, by some researchers, that sociopaths could occasionally bond with one or two primary relationships. Like a key that might unlock certain emotional depths. And in Cameron's case, it had been his deceased wife, a woman who'd been killed by a vengeful psychopath they'd escaped not too long ago.
She let out a faint huff of air, allowing it to lift her bangs like dandelion fluff.
Cameron continued in that slow, calm voice of his. "You've given me a new life. I wouldn't know what to do without you." He braced his off arm against the wheel, holding it briefly as he reached out with his hand to touch her.
